Setting up Patterns?

If I were to blank out all the notches in Pattern 1 (accept everything), will it act the same as pushing the All Metal button? I know this would seem to be intuitive, but I need to know from people that have done it, if this in fact true. I'm thinking that because the machine defaults into Pattern 1 I should setup Pattern 1 as an AM pattern, Pattern 2 with just ferrous rejected and Pattern 3 slightly more restrictive. This way if I can turn the machine on and off while relic hunting and not worry about if I've left it in Pattern 1 or remembered to switched to AM.

When you turn your MD'er on it does not go to Pattern 1 by default. What ever pattern you are in when you turn your MD'er off is the pattern it well be in when you turn your MD'er back on. You can open up the notched out segments in pattern 1 and it well be the same as being in AM and when you turn off your MD'er it well save those changes.

Uh, Mark on my XT-70 if I shut it down in AM, it doesn't come back up in AM when I turn it back on. It comes back on in Pattern 1.

When you turn on the X-Terra, it automatically tunes itself to the last Pattern mode you used. If you are an all metal hunter, you have to remember to either change it to All Metal, or set up a "default Pattern" with zero discrimination, as I have. Here is a post I made in July 08 describing how I did mine. reference paragraph 3. http://www.findmall.com/read.php?55,771943,772708#msg-772708

Your right, I just checked my x505 and it does go to last pattern 1,2 or 3 I always thought that what ever pattern 1,2,3 or AM you were in when you turned it off, that's the pattern it would be in when you turned it back on. Sorry, my bad.

Thanks Randy. If you ever decide you want to write a book on this detector, give me a shout as I'm a tech writer by trade.

I thought even with all notches off there was still some iron discrimination that you don't get in AM?

It will come back on Pattern 1 or whatever the last pattern used but will not start on AM, I have pattern 1 blanked out. HH

I, like Digger, thought that there was a small amount of discrimination in any of the Pattern modes, even with all noches blanked out. But, in reading the manual, I can find nothing to document this. So, FWIW, I would guess that a "clean" disc pattern, (1,2,3, or 4), would effectively be the same as the AM pattern. ---- Maybe a good question for Des? ....................

The All Metal mode is what I consider to be a zero discrimination mode. In a post I made back in June 06, I made this post, based on my comparing the different models of X-Terras and a very low ferrous target. Here is part of that post, as well as a link to the string.

Another post mentioned that the X-70 has more lower end adjustment than the X-50. Although this is true (as far as the number of notch segments used to cover the "iron range" for each model is concerned) the X-50 actually has the capability of "going lower" than the X-70. The X-50 can register targets with a reading of -9. Whereas the X-70 will register the lowest targets with a -8. And, as mentioned above, the X-30 "bottoms out" at -4. So, even though you can "fine tune" the X-70 to either accept or reject more defined notch segments, the X-50 should (theoretically) detect (-9) targets in a Pattern mode that neither the X-30 or the X-70 will detect.

And here is the link to a more comprehensive "follow up" post I made after testing various detectors with a piece of ferrite. Keep in mind, ferrite is magnetic, like steel. But it is not a conductor of electricity. http://www.findmall.com/read.php?55,362081,362081#msg-362081 and the follow up post http://www.findmall.com/read.php?55,362081,363809#msg-363809

Yes, Prospecting is a true All Metal with minimal ground filtering. If you want to push the X70 or X705 into to being a "High Gain" at the limits detector, then low iron mask & high sensitivity settings will start the ride.:)

Just wanted to say hi to you all ,. I just 3 days ago got a X-Terra 305 . have been using a ace 250 . I'm in upstate NY . I 've been out once still learning the numbers . Every time I read the manual I'm just a little more confused . my wife and I both MD we are John and Debbie Gifford from Up-State NY Albany area . we both had Bh 505 whites pr 4 and ace 250 . I sold my BH 505 used the money toward my new 305 I may need some help with it Who amI kidding I will need a lot of help with it I think I have turning it on and off down pat Thanks

Welcome to the X-Terra forum John and Debbie. My first recommendation is to read the FAQFAQ section near the top of these posts. It includes an index of posts that seem to be particularly helpful to many. In addition, you can do a search of this site, to find posts that may have had the same questions you have. And last but certainly not least, ask questions! There are a lot of very knowledgeable X-terra users on here. Again, welcome to the forum. HH Randy
