Setting the Threshold on the Vaq.

Now that I have spent a lot of hours getting to know the Vaq. I went back and reviewed the youtube vids. So 53silver sets his ground balance with the threshold humming at about the 1 oclock position. Then when he switches to disc. he ups the threshold to 3 oclock. Why? This just makes the machine scream when you switch back to all metal. Does the louder threshold give better performance? Ive been tuning into the ground with the machine barely humming and leaving it there.

As the threshold is increased, smaller, deeper targets are made louder.
The threshold is a dynamics control for your audio feedback.
You will tend to hear deeper targets more easily by increasing, but the ability to determine size and depth is diminished.
I used to detect in "super tune" all the time, and dug some really deep stuff. Now I hunt (in disc) using a very low hum on thresh. My digs are not as deep on average, but my ability to ID a targets size and depth has increased greatly.
Super tuning is great for areas with low trash, and deep or small targets.

How anyone sets up their machine is purely personnal preference, I'm not saying some folks don't misadjust sometimes though. I run my threshold a bit hotter than the usual 1 o'clock position on occassion if it helps me hear those deeper targets. If you want to run super tuned and have conditions that permit it , then you max out the threshold along with the sens. It all boils down to, whats working best for you.

I experienced that on deep dimes , when I start moving the discriminate control up , that the dime fades away and not bleep out. It may continue to give an audio signal then, if the threshold was turned up. Ill play with that.

I go back and forth between all metal and disc. frequently. It seems if the threshold was at 3 oclock Id have to readjust it every time modes were switched. That seems like a lot of trouble.

I went out today and played with the threshold and sensitivity on weak signals. Made some good finds. I love this machine.

Hatpin, glad to hear you say that you love the machine. I just bought one today, can't wait to try it. I've heard such good things about the Vaquero and the whole Tesoro line. Good luck with yours. Happy Hunting.

Yep if you want to "supertune" the machine, which is just basically turning up the audio in disc mode, you can't switch back to all metal and have it work without turning down the threshold. But if you just hunt in disc and thumb the disc knob up to check targets it works well.

it's just personal preference, try and use what works best for you. I use mine at 1 o'clock

Here is why you set it where you want this is just my preff , it tells me depth.

Like in the video Ive been playing with different settings. I like the way dimes fade out with the threshold tuned to about 1 oclock . But Ive been super tuning also the last couple of days. It just depends on the situation .Of the three detectors I have had, this one is the easiest to learn.

Ive been recovering a "lot" more multiple coin spills with this unit. With my digital detector I kept ignoring unstable readouts that jumped all over the place .Ive recommended the Tesoro to three friends who are interested in getting started.

Just caught your post. The reason I set my threshhold to 3:00 is because I want as much depth as possible. I can check the depth of the target by simply raising the coil. I also know that at this setting a dime can be read at 7" +/-. If you lower the threshhold too low you will loose depth along with a diminishing tone, so be careful. Before I switch to All Metal, I simply move to about 12:00 which is just audible in headphones. The reason I used 1:00 in the video was because I wanted to make sure the tone was being picked up on the video. You can send me a PM if you like.
