Setting sensitivity on the GT...??? Battery recharge time..??

I have been using the "auto" setting on the sensitivity because the manual recommended that as a new user that is what I should do. However...last week I was in an old yard and switched to manual sensitivity, (I had to go all the way to about the 3:00 setting to get it to calm down)... I started hitting on things that the detector did not see while in auto.
Do you have any recommendations on how to set the manual sensitivity? Do I go more for a steady threshold tone or for fewer signals, assuming that a lot of them are not real? I'm still a little confused about how to use this setting, but after getting hits that would not show up in auto, I want to start trying to use in with manual sensitivity.

Also, it seem's that may NiMH battery recharges REALLY FAST. I mean the light is out in like 20 minutes after using the detector for the better part of a day. Is it supposed to recharge that fast? I've never had anything recharge anywhere near that fast.

Thanks,

Julien

I know what you mean about the auto setting jbow and quickly discounted that feature. I've only had the GT for a few months but the way i set sensitvity on my detectors is to first establish threshold stability with coil at waist level then lower to ground and on GT allow for GB to set and micro adjust sens to ground conditions.I feel if a detector is unstable 3ft in the air it can't be stable scraping the ground. I don't mind running a little bit ragged edged on threshold at ground level providing the detector will lock on targets. A lot depends on how well you know your hunting sites. I sometimes drop dime or cut a plug and place a dime in a hole just to see how i'm hitting it as a quick check.I live in northern Delaware and hotrocks are so prolific in some areas that you can place a dime on the ground and swipe almost any detector over it and not get a response and yet move that dime an inch or two over and it hits strong.I firmly believe in using the manual setting and adjusting for both air and ground conditions. In regards to the rechargeable battery i have never seen the light go out as it just dims even after 12 hrs it's still on and have 4 rechargeable battery packs for use on the Sov and a Musky. Just my opinion with little operating time on the GT. HH Bill

I'll try the 3' GB thing then adjust it at the ground. I wonder what i've been missing. I'll have to go back and look heh... :geek:

In auto sensitivity will give you the smoothest threshold, out of auto will not be as smooth. Run it as high as you can without it chattering like Bill told you. I find if in the air and chattering it is too high, but I like to run it as high as i can and not get fooled by a lot of nails. My setting have been around the 11 o'clock position and I think you will find most run about that.I find the higher sensitivity you may have to go slower with the coil as it may null more too on iron, too high and you will get a lot of falsing on iron, so if I get fooled a little I know I have my sensitivity about right.

Good luck

HAH... nails. That's what I was wondering about today. I went to a site, a house maybe 60 years old. I have been running in auto and finding some stuff but as I said I want to go deeper and today I was running in manual...around 12:00...anywhere from 11:00 to 2:00 and several times I dug nails that read between 176-180. I was wondering why this was happening. I need to lower the sens a little more?

Thanks,
J

Checking the signal after you have pinpoint it by going back to disc. I find I do the 90 degrees pinpoint so you have the center of the coil right over the target in question and if it was a deeper iffy signal I will hold the coil still and switch to disc as you are right over the target. Now slightly wiggle the coil and if it null it is a nail and if the tone start climbing then you know it is a good target.
I also been doing something different with the GT also and while I am disc and will move to coil back to me and try to get the tip of the coil over the target that is giving the good tone so you know where it is and then come at it from a different angle and sometime i will go all around the target, if it is a good one it will not move, but a nail will null out trying from a different angle or it will move so you know it is bad.

Started at around 12 and if stable move to 11 or 10 which usually produced good depth...Extreme bad ground or saltwater areas the auto sensitivity might work well but on the whole start at 12 and go from there...Not a fan of the auto function....

Hello,
I'm new to the forum, and have little or no knowledge, however I just received my Sov GT and they said to charge the batteries for 12 to 14 hours before you start using the machine.
My little green light also dimmed very quickly to the point it did not look like it was on, I just charged it for the full period they said. I assume as you use the batteries the duration of use and recharge times may change. I have many rechargeable devices and as a rule of thumb I just charge them overnight when they run down. This seems to work well for me, but as I said the only info I have on the GT batteries is what I read last night, LOL

PS I am heading out to the yard to play with the GT for the first time, I'm sure I be back with a bunch of questions LOL

Minelab originally said the light would go out when fully charged, however......
It usually only dimms a little. Slight differences in components may make it appear to go out. If you gave it a full 12-14 hr charge it's OK. It's a trickle charger and won't cook the batteries.

You can recharge any time you want without hurting the pack. Charge time to replenish is about half the operating time.

In other words, use it for 2 hrs, charge for about 1.

Will run for a long time. Operating current is about 50 ma. Pack capacity is 1000 mah. About 20 hrs on a full charge.
