Setting ground balance on the TDI???

Is it normal for it to be difficult to set the ground balance at the beach on wet salty sand on a TDI? It is the only place I seem to have difficulty setting ground balance and can't help but wonder if the salt content in the sand is upsetting things. Apart from this situation the ground balance is really easy to set. Is this normal for the TDI or any other detector for that matter?
Am off to an old hydraulically sluiced gold Field New Years day to see if I can pick up a nugget or two, can't wait!
