That is the only way you will be able to tell for sure. Like I have said before, <b>most</b> explorers dated 2000 on the startup screen have new cases. Most 99's have had them replaced by now also. If there is one in particular you are thinking about getting, call minelab with the serial number and they should be able to check to see if that one has new plastic or not. That is if visually inspecting it yourself is not an option. But I wouldn't let that stop you if you can get a good deal on one. They only charged me $30 for an hour labor on my second hand, beat all to hell explorer. They did all kinds of stuff for that $30! Waaaaaay more than just a new case! They will treat you right!
