(Reply from Garrett below) and note sent to Garrett

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Tim and George, the Diggers. As a matter of fact, our video team recently filmed a YouTube video of KG and Ringy hunting in Kansas and Missouri. As a separate side video, we compiled footage of KG and Ringy explaining why they dig certain targets and various tips for beginning detectorists. They also took the time to explain filling in your holes and how to leave a hunt site in good condition when you leave.

Here's a link to that video:

Subject: A Concern About The Show Diggers And Garrett Detectors Missing A Big Opertunity Please Read

To whom it may concern and I say all this with all due respect to Garrett and the show Diggers,

A quick note or thought,

I think Garrett is missing a Big Big opertunity here to get the proper information and ethics out about detecting. I think Garrett if they can should influence those guys on the Diggers show to have a little blip or session at the end or beginning of there show about digging holes correct, getting permision and the responsability of owning a detector. This would get the information out there to folks new to the hobby because of the show and make us look great to the uninformed public that see's us and also show the fun side of detecting as the show trys to do now.

Right now on that show people are only seeing to Goofy guys running around digging holes saying they got the juice and found the nector. ( sometimes even though its all in fun and a TV thing to sell the show they sort of in a way make us look stupid sometimes to people)

I am constantly finding holes that new detectorist dig wrong, bucher or leave un-filled or they leave the trash on the ground next to the hole. There has been an up serge of this since all these detecting and treasure finding shows have been seen on TV in the past few years, one of them being Diggers.

It is our responsabilty guys like me a long time detectorist, other detectorist and the manufactures responsability to push these rules hard or we will loose this hobby. It is happening every day at diffrent places throughout this country because of guys abusing the way they detect.

Again I say this with all due respect and I know Garrett and other manufactures care deaply about this as I do.

Sincerely,
Bill G

I hope this link for the Video shows up

Now that was a good show, wish/hope to see more like that on the TV.

It's great to see that they repsonded positively...however I still feel that every show should include a little snippett of ethics, proper digging, trash removal, or whatever, and not just the one show. Perhaps at the end of every show, the show coulld end with KG and Ringy saying something to the effect of " Remember, when you are out there detecting you are an ambassador for the hobby. Please act responsible and follow the ethics of detecting so that we preserve this hobby for ourselves, and generations to come". Or something like that. I don't see it any different than Bob Barker at the end of his show saying "Remember to control the pet population....have.....

Putting up a YouTube video is preaching to the choir. It's the non-metal detectorists who see that show who need to be shown how we take care to not leave a trace when we have to.

Unless they put something in as part of every show -- even 20 seconds at the beginning or end (or even better -- both) with the guys explaining what most of us really do, whoever is involved with that show in any way -- including sponsorship -- is directly contributing to the restriction and likely eventual end to Metal Detecting as we know it.

I am mystified why a company like Garrett doesn't see that they are acting against their own long term best interest. Sure, they'll sell a bunch of AT Pros in a few years, but the damage this show does will last long into the future -- long after the show has been cancelled and that sales bump is a memory.

It's not an instructional how to on metal detecting. Take the show for what it is and enjoy it. There is a disclaimer on every show IF you read it and listen to them, honestly the general public is made up of individuals. The ones that will be responsible will search for and learn what to do and what not to do, the rest wouldn't follow rules if they were tattooed on the backs of their hands.
