is there a trick to setting the sensitivity just right? i know if you are in non trash sites its easy to tell when it becomes unstable but what about trashy sites?

Generally run it as high as you can until you start getting pops, beeps, pulsating threshhold, non-repeatable good signals or lots of false deep silver signals. In high trash areas you are usually going to want to sacrifice some depth in order to gain better discrimination so don't worry about knocking the sense down a little extra. The analogy I have heard is that if your sense is too high in trashy areas it's like driving with your high beams on in the fog. More power isn't always better. Also, if you are running it in auto it is generally easier because once you get close to the right sense setting it will automatically adjust for all but the most extreme change in ground conditions. Good luck and good hunting!
