Sensitivity

So I just got a new Explorer. Today I hunted an older park. I've hunted it before with my Sov. and also a Whites IDX. I can usually pull a few oldies out of the park, but today I was having problems with the Explorer.
The park isn't terribly trashy, but I couldn't seem to tell the difference between what I thought were deep coins and edges of iron/trash. I was trying to listen for deep, quiet signals, but they sounded like falses. I tried various different sensitivity settings, auto/manual, iron mask, no iron mask, etc. but still couldn't quite get it.
So then I went to an old home site, a more trashy spot, and put on my 8" coil. I went to factory presets and this seemed to work better.
In this spot though I seemed to get tricked a lot by iron/trash - like when I hit the edge of the trash, it sounds like a good target. Am I running the sensitivity too high? It seemed to be constantly nulled while swinging, but when I'd stop, the threshold would come back.
How do I know what the best sensitivity setting is?
I know, I asked a lot, but any help is appreciated....

It sounds like you are having trouble from large trash. It will have different tones as you go over different parts of it, but you should be able to tell when you go to pinpoint that it is large trash if the beep is about as wide as the coil. A coin beep would be significantly smaller in diameter than the coil. It is hard for many people to hunt when there is a constant null. If the constant nulling is caused by iron, you want to accept some iron with iron mask so you don't get a lot of deep nulling & can get coins next to iron. I think most use -10 to -15 in iron mask (-16 is total acceptance of iron, 0 is total rejection). It is definitely recommended that when you get nulling, to sweep very slowly. Also, when you are getting a lot of nulling, turning down the sensitivity may help some. I get impatient when I get a lot of nulling & sometimes just move to a better spot. Where there is not a lot of nulling, you can turn up the sensitivity as high as it will go & not beep while the coil is not moving. Where there is not a lot of nulling (such places do exist), you can sweep at a moderate speed. Also, if there is a lot of small trash rather than big nulls, you can set it to reject some things if the noises are too overwhelming. Of course, copper, clad & silver will all display the crosshairs in the upper right corner & will have very high tone. I'm just ignoring the low tones & skipping nickels for now. Some people actually dig everything, but I don't like to dig a lot of trash & cut up the grass more than necessary. Also, gain makes a difference in how much you hear. Some like gain low so deep coins are weak, but I dig shallow as well as deep coins, so I set my gain at 8. I tried 10, but it was beeping all over where there weren't any coins. HH, George (MN)

George,
I'm getting more of an ear for discerning nickels from tabs on the Explorer. I check the crosshairs too, and dig my hunches. Pulling some nickels from tab-infested areas but all so far Jeffersons. Hoping for Buffs or a gold ring.
You might want to check it out.

IMHO the Explorer's auto sensitivity is excellent. Just set the max ( I usually run 32) and let it ride unless you have reason to run less.
You will get the hang of the machine gradually.
