Sensitivity

Hello all
I think I'm having a confidence crisis due to some bad luck w/ finds recently. However, I thought one of the problems may be my sensitivity setting. It seems like my Explorer won't run stable (I define stable as mostly a threshold, but a little bit of falsing) until I push the sensitivity down to 24 and in many cases as low as 20. At this sensitivity though I get concerned about the deeper finds. Consequently, I've been trying to stay at 22 - 26, even w/ a bit more falsing. I'm concerned the extra bit of instability may be causing me to miss the tougher ones, due to the fact I may think it's a false signal. By the way, I almost always use manual, although semiauto sure is a lot easier on the ears. Two questions:
> What sensitivity are others able to run at (especially in the upper mid-west)?
> How stable do you think the threshold should be for peak operation?
Thanks in advance for the help. I want to get back on track!

I get like that also, but then I convince myself that I will get better depth than I will if I try to over Sens and area that will not handle it. Me and Justin run as low as 8 manual and still dig coins at impressive depths considering. Like 6"-7" on coins with a little coaxing. Not bad at all if you aren't getting any depth anyway in an area that is a constant null with too high of a sens.
As far as how stable of a threshold. Let me TRY and interpret what Mike Moutray told me one time. You want your threshold just breaking up a little and sputtering some on your swing. If you have a solid threshold, you are not running enough sens. If you have a null for the majority of your swing you have too much sens. You want a happy medium. It is also my opinion that you will not miss much if anything running 32 auto.

Jim,
It varries what I run my sensitivity at, I try to run 22-28 manual, but have seen times I have been at 12 semi auto for it to be stable. I go by running as high as I can and still get a stable detector, if it chatters it is too much and if it is too smooth it is not enough.
I feel if you have the sensitivity too high it can do more harm than good and you may lose depth.
There is a guy in ST Cloud that has been able to run 32 manual sensitivity and it wont chatter, but it sure does here.

I dug a 1902 IH at 9" and a 1903 copper dog license at 11" running in 10 manual. Lately I've been running in manual sensitivity and setting it so that the tone JUST starts to break when the coil is swung and making good use of the Noise Cancel button. I like using auto whenever possible, but as I learn more about this machine I'm finding that it isn't always a good idea, but I'm also finding that there's a way to keep it tuned if you don't mind doing it yourself
