I feel experimntation is the name of the game...I feel those experienced that can get a stable unit with a manual setting in the 20's should get good depth for the area or perhaps a semi-auto setting would work better especially for newbies to the Explorer in decent ground..Indeed sem-auto setting may overcompensate in extremely bad ground but in yours it may not. Heck I hunted in quickstart with -16 sem-auto setting being the setting and got 8 inch silver coins. I guess what I am saying is do experiment and see what works for you. Nothing set in stone only reports from all over the states with success in a variety of settings. In addendum just because Joe Blow uses a particuliar setting with success don't mean it will work for you..We can debate manual or sem-auto but nothing like a little on the site settings to see what works best for us.

Very true. I had been hunting with my gain set at 6 for a couple weeks and found nothing.
Changed it back to 10 and hunted for an hour today on the same ground and found two IH. Apparently I could not hear the weaker signal at 6. You just never know.

AK,

Since we all different "tastes", then Minelab gives a menu to make our own personal selections. Our preferences also change from time to time. Some nights we decide to eat chicken and some nights we decide to eat beef and enjoy them equally.

Glenn - That is exactly what I mean. What works for some won't work for others. Personaly I don't mind all the noise from IM -16, but I understand how it could drive someone else crazy. As you said, thats why they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream.
