Sensitivity setting??

Hello all. I'm having some trouble trying to determine where to set the sensitivity. Everyone says to put it just below where you're getting 'noise.' Trouble is, I'm not getting noise, but my routine hunting areas give me almost constant nulls. If I hold the coil still I get my threshold back.
I can turn sens way down and get a threshold while hunting but I'm not sure this is a good idea. If I put a penny down the detector still 'sees' it (usually) when in a constant null.
Should I keep turning the sens up until I get noise on top of the nulling?? Stupid question I know, but I don't want to hunt with low settings just to keep my threshold fairly constant.
Thanks,
Doug

Not a stupid question at all, I have sites like that.. what I do is in nulls usually not go over 24 manual.. then when I come across a deeper signal, I raise it or lower it till I think I am getting the best response

Thanks Jim. I hadn't thought about tweaking it on a coin still in the ground. Duh! I was putting them on top of the ground in this area and tweaking then.

I'll give it a try. I'm not too comfortable with semi-auto as I'm always afraid it will work it's way down to something like 5 at just the second I pass over a seated. Forever the pessimist. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

But even in manual I still feel the xs isn't seeing farther through the iron, just making more noise. I haved checked several signals which were so so in auto then compared them in man. and they didn't get any stronger. What I feel most comfortable with is semi auto 30 deep and very slow. This works good for me but I have never found anything at extreme depth in this manner, I believe the ex is the best at seeing through iron but 12 inch coins in iron might be asking too much.I have a good understanding of the explorer but post my opinion mostly for fun so don't take my word to be golden. hello i set the sensitivity to where the machine runs stable . i got sites where you always lose the thres. and soon as you lift it up it hums just find. its ok your still going to find plenty. just set the sens so its not falseing. i,am down to 14 at some sites and still getting silver deep.that unit has to run smooth<<<<<<<<<<<<<< smooth thats what you need

Thanks Charlie. I've gotten to where I leave a penny in my pouch and throw it down when I'm wondering if the nulling is affecting anything. After raising the detector up 10 inches I always feel amazed at how far away I can pick up the target and go about my business.
