Sensitivity setting question

Hey everyone,

I live in central Ohio and have a Explorer II. I've heard many people say they run their sensitivity as high as 28. I have also heard that you shouldn't run your sensitivity so high that it causes the threshold to go completely quiet. I usually run mine any where from 10 to 15 in order to keep the treshold stable. Where should I run all my settings at?

Thanks
Paul

I think 10 is fairly low but I am not sure what kind of ground you have to deal with where you are.
Personally, loosing threshold has never stopped me from running mine from 22 to 27, that's on my XS,
maybe someone with the Exp2 could give you more info.
If you are around powerlines, you may not be able to get it up in the high 20's, if the default is 16 like it is on the XS, I would try to run it at least that much. Some prefer semi-auto to manual, other settings just play with them and see what you like best. If you want to check the stability, clear the screen and hold it away from metal, if it starts making sounds and the screen is erratic, you may have to lower your sens.

Depends on what you are looking for. IF you are chasing recent loses within 4-5 inches you should be fine at 10-15. I personally hunt for the older deeper targets and rarely run under 22 and will pump it up until the cursor jumps and then back it down a couple until it stables out. Usually around 25-27. I hunted in KY for two years and would run as high as 28-29. It does get a little noisy at times as I hunt in IM -12 on the E2. I listen to all tones but you could run a coin program adn cut down on some of the chatter. Again it depends on what you are lookign for.

My suggestion for deeper coins

Sensitivity as high as you can or just set it around 22. You will dig a 8" dime at 22.
Variability 10
Volume 10
Gain --I run at 5-6 as I like to hear the difference in target depth -- I only dig the deeper targets when looking for old silver.
Fast ON Deep OFF
Conductive --Normal Audio

I'm probably missing something but I consistently dig coins in the 8-9" range.

Good luck

Ron

Everyone has their unique tollerance to the sounds the Explores make. Im in Indiana and i hunt mostly around 24 on the SE. Disc has a lot to do with the nulling as well. For the most part i hunt with nails and screwcap disc... nothing elce. I beleave Andy Sisbish wrote when using is hunting in trashy areas he turns down the threshold to 5 and uses audio 1 so he doesnt have to listen to the constant nulling. He seems to be a beleaver in patterns. Which will null a great deal. If you are going to turn your sensitivity down that low and are just looking for a quieter machine use Auto Sensitivity and turn it up to say 30. That gives it a great deal of room to operate. The higher the sensitivity the deeper the machine will attempt to go... the down side is the more iron it will encounter. In trashy area i turn mine down as well. The explorer seems to seperate the trash better, especially with a standard coil, than most machines. A good rule of thumb for me is to set it up until its a little jumpy or if the number are slow to change start turning it down.

I was running in the 23...24 area until I got the 6" Excelerator...now I can run much hotter(2:geek:.... I usually can maintain a threshold at this level...

I got it but I don't quite got it.... Here's my problem. While hunting the explore will run perfect, nice threshold etc. Then I'll move into a different area and all of a sudden I have no threshold at all.......None!!!!.... From what I gather here I have moved into an area of high ground mineralization or high iron content. Living in Pa. one can be hunting someones back yard and happen into an area where they dumped there ashes years ago and boom there goes the threshold.....This has also happened on old railroad beds where there is a base of cinders or other areas where there is black river dirt.

At this point I'm assuming that I need to turn my sensitivity down. As of now I have been running my sensitivity between 16 and 22, the gain is set at 8. Also I'm using the slim line coil. I sure need to find out what to do. Noting worse than running with no threshold and being nulled out for long periods of time.

The only reason you get a null is because you are using some kind of discrimination....hunt in all metal.....no disc. ....wide open....and you should never loose the threshold.....it is called a null......use a small coil 6" or smaller and turn down your sens. between 10-18....and find any goodies in the pile of iron.....turn down the gain before turning your sens. down....gain at 6 or 7 should be ok for a start.....ferrous sounds is great for lots of iron....iron is low grunt....anything diff than low grunt dig......
