Sensitivity, High or Low??

unearth

Ok, I know this subject has been talked about a zillion times, or so, but, a post I put up earlier today has had two replies stating, if I'm correct, that my sensitivity is set to high during my beach hunts due to the fact that I'm getting a readout of 0.0 for my ferrous/conductivity TID some of the time. My understanding has been that one of the axiom's of metal detectors and detecting is to run the sensitivity as high as you can before instability is reached. Is this still an axiom that most of you follow? Thanks in advance for your input.

Run it up until it chatters and then back it off just a bit

Yes exactly

If you are detecting on a salt beach, you can run the sensitivity higher on "DRY" sand but once you hit the "wet" sand it will probably start chattering. And if there is "black" sand, well that is when you need to switch to a PI machine. As good as the 3030 is at most sites, it does have it's limits, and from my experience "wet, black" sand is one of it's Achilles heals. Different horses for different courses.

Just my 2 cents,

I don't know why you are getting the 0/0 for your TID. But in regard to running maximum manual Sensitivity........the problem with running your Sensitivity as high as you can, before it reaches instability is that.... by the time we realize it is unstable, as humans, it is beyond the optimum setting. If my Auto says 20, then Auto +3 offset would be 23. In that case, I can usually go to 25 manual without worrying about it. Nothing scientific, just my opinion. But I am skeptical to go higher, wondering if I may have passed the point where the receive signal has become distorted by the influence of something other than my intended target. If I have passed that point and have depended on chatter to tell me so, I've given my ears more credit than they deserve.

One of the analogies that I use regarding Sensitivity is a car's headlights in the fog...... If you put your high beams on in fog, much of the light is reflected back, resulting in your not being able to see as far as if you'd have left them on low. Similarly, if you are hunting in an area where there are multiple targets in each sweep, or the mineralization is extreme, having your Sensitivity too high will cause the target signal to
