Sensitivity and Gain???

Hello Everyone..
I am finally getting back into the swing of things :detecting: I took way to much time off from detecting.. But when you get a real job and move out on your own you have to put your priority's first. I have a question on the E-trac.. When I was running my Explorer SE I kept the Gain on max and my sensitivity at manual 22 - 24 most of the time.. I hunt mainly in Ohio and Indiana. We have great soil. I am curios to where people are running their E-tracs.. How high of Gain.. Manual or auto Sensitivity? I seem to dig a lot more nails with the Big E with the gain at 30 than I did with my Explorer... Thanks for any help guys and its glad to be back and see everyone's great finds! Keep it up and happy hunting :)

I personally run mine on Auto +3 almost all the time. My sens. runs around 23-27 there. I run ground neutral unless it dips below 20 suggested, I always run trash high. My gain is at 24. I've gone up to 29, but I run deep ON most of the time so I usually leave it 24.

Good to have you back. Looking forward to some of your finds and stories!

I run manual in the woods, auto in trashy areas. My gain is set at 26.

I have learned that manual sensitivity will reach deep targets that auto cannot.

Welcome back to the hunt.:minelab:

I run auto +3 for sens. all the time, gain is at 30, I dig very few nails..........unless you count the ones in the holes with coins!

Thanks for the reply guys... What kind of depth are you digging the smaller coins in Auto Sensitivity? A buddy of mine has a test bed with a couple of DEEP quarters and a large cent.. 10+ inches.. But the deepest dime is only at 8.. The E-trac pics them all up in auto... But i wonder how deep it will go on a dime size target.. Thanks for the help :)

I will tell you this, I got my etrac about 2 months ago. Very first night I had it, I put it in auto +3 and hit a site I had pounded with my x-70 and I dug a barber dime at a solid 8" that had 2-3 nails in the hole as well. I have found a few indians that were 8-9" as well. But most coins in my area are only 5-7" so I hit em easy.

I find a lot more coins that others missed because they were masked by iron. I think there are more coins that are missed because of being masked than there are coins that are missed because they are too deep. And that is where the etrac shines, it is absolutely amazing in yards that are littered with trash and iron. It is amazing at seeing "thru" iron.

Hi "D"
Glad to see your smile back up on the forum.
My soil here in Utah is mineralized and in one spot I hunt the Sensitivity on Auto will be from 2 to 6, and that is not a joke! I go for manual and try to get as high as 12 but the machine will just start to null after that. I have found targets but I am sure I am loosing depth with overkill for the ground so I back it back down and try to push up when I can. That is just the worst site I hunt. But normally I use Auto +2 or +3 mostly but about a third or my time I go to Manual and push up to where it starts to false and then just back down a bit...I feel I am doing good when I can be at 22 Sens.
As for Gain I keep it very close to max if I am looking for deep coins as it is really a volume gain for deep targets right? If I am on a hunt where the targets are shallow I trun the Gain down.
Did you load the Emulator into your computer? If you did you can play around with some of the adjustments at home to get a feel for the change but it will never be the same as in field. I know you had your SE workin like magic and I will be interested to see your results with the E. Just try not to get it so muddy.

Good Luck,

Hey Derrelld I run factory gain and auto +3 when I switched I also noticed I was digging up allot of stuff that sounded good but wasn't. Took me a while to learn that I needed to look at the screen more than the SE and wait till I see better numbers. I was also real worried about the depth until I found a V at around 10 inches or more. Its been a few months since I switched and am not looking back yet. Glad to see you back!

Thanks for the welcome back you all... I am finally off a entire weekend so you know what that means.... Hitting it hard!!! I completely see what you are saying Goes4ever.. I have noticed how well it pick up the coins in the trash.. I just have a hand full of spots that i know for a fact all the good coins are 10+ inches deep... I just am a little uncomfortable using auto until i hit a coin at those depths myself.. I really am thankful for the reply guys... I am one of those people that wont put something down or be happy until i master it LOL
Happy Hunting
