How can you tell if the sens is to high. If anyone can give me some hints on how to find the highest sens i can run i would be very thankful
Thanks Mike

Hey Mike,
When I am in iron mask mode and I have a bunch of nulling (silencing of the threshold tone) going on, I turn my manual sensitivity down until I get intermittant threshhold return in between targets. This helps you to see in between the targets that are being discriminated out. When the sensitivity it too high, the discriminated out targets, and other surface trash targets, have such large areas of influence that they can cover up coins that are deeper and inbetween them. Another way to deal with loss of threshold is to minimize your iron mask pattern to -15.
But you will also get into the situation of heavy iron trash which causes 95%-99% nullout no matter what you do in iron mask or no matter what you do with your manual sensitivity. In this case, some people go into all metals mode (iron mask -16) and switch to Ferrous Tones. This totally eliminates nulling because nothing is being discriminated out. The Ferrous Tones changes many iron tones into low tones and leaves the coins as high tones. But the main problem that some iron objects will cause a false signal that sounds like a coin. So you have to figure out which coin tones are actual coin tones and which are false coin signals being produced some inches away from the iron targets. I don't have this skill yet but I am working on learning Ferrous Tones for that very situation.
Mike

Since changing my settings to ferrous tones, I am now finding more coins than ever. Nickels are still a mystery and I dig quite a few beaver tails searching for those buff and V nicks.
The other issue is screw on bottle tops, which are very close to a coin sound, so they are an occasional problem as well. However, since going over to ferrous, the coins really stick out when your coil moves over one.

Hey Ken,
What are your variability and limits set too?
Are you hunting in -16 iron mask ever?
Mike

By the way, I keep my screen wide open with no disc. It took about a week to get used to the constant low tones, but like I said, when I go over a coin now, it is very obvious and hard to miss in ferrous mode. You get fooled occasionally with the screw on tops, but it's worth dealing with the issue.
I believe there is a slight diffeence in the tones of the screw top vs. coins, but I am not quite good enough to distinguish that yet, so I dig anyway. Hopefully, in the near future, I will learn that slight difference and then I will really be in good shape.

Mike, my variablity and limits are both set to max 10, no disc. I also keep fast off and deep on.

Hey Ken,
When you are hunting in super iron infested areas where the targets are 4 inches apart and you are using IM-16 (wide open), how high do you turn up your manual sensitivity? I know that there are no more nulls, but I am wondering if you have found that you still need to turn your sensitivity down lower so that all the surface targets have smaller areas of influence so that you can see in between the trash surface targets? Is this still an issue?
Thanks buddy! I really believe that running wide open in Ferrous tones is a super advantage of the XS and I want to tap into it right now! Down with the nulls!
Mike

Mike,
I always keep sens on manual and I set it to where I get at least an occasional threshold (usually between 22 - 2:geek:. I like to hear the threshold, but more often, I am hearing the constant sound of trash items. It took a day or two to get used to all the noise, but I stuck it out and now it does not bother me at all. Once you go over a coin, you usually KNOW for certain that it is a coin. I do not seem to have any problems with the trash interfering with my depth. Maybe I have just not been to a spot like that yet, but so far, it has been a non issue. Ferrous is definitely the way to go for me, as it makes the coins easy to pull out of the trash.
