Send it back or give it another try?

Well I have finally got a day off from working in this record Texas Heat!! Since it was going to be another record high today I thought I would try my new metal scoop and the AT at a local lake. At least I could stay somewhat cool in the water (100 degrees by 10:30 AM). AT was working great...finding lots of pop tops and pull tabs!!! Was about mid calf deep in the water digging up another pop top when the AT pro went for a swim. No big deal I though since it is not that deep. Picked it up out of the water after digging the pop top and that's when the problem happened. Screen display was working fine but I could not get any readings. Stuck my new metal scoop under it to see if it would get a reading and nothing! Turned it off and on a few times, tried the pinpointing feature with the metal scoop and got a faint reading while the coil was sitting on the scoop. Changed modes and nothing! Could not see any water under the screen so I was stumped. Thought my day was done (since it was already 100 degrees no big deal). Walked back to my truck with the AT still on and it never got a reading...strange. Saw a beer cap laying on the ground and ran the coil over it with no results (would love to be able to do that most of the time but not now). Got back to the truck and was loading things up when...the AT starting getting a signal. Strange! I walked to some grassy areas and started swinging it...signals fine. Saw a pop top on the ground and it was singing like it always does.

SO my question is...Do I send it back and have it looked at or try it in the water again and see what happens?

Any advise is gladly accepted.

txtrooper, i would say if its working keep at it. i had a similar problem when i got a tiny bit of water under the faceplate...next day everything worked (although it didn't seem quite the same) so I decided not to send it in until it got worse or quit working as this is the best time of year to detect and i didn't have a backup....the next weekend I dunked the AT again and it gave off an odd sound and that was it...she was done...lots of water under the screen. Mine is currently at Garrett getting repaired and upgraded. If you have a backup detector I would say put the AT through its paces and see what happens....if it quits on ya send it in. :) I have since bought another detector for backup becuase being without a detector for 2 weeks is no fun :( Good luck!

I have the same problem... water between the cover plate and the LCD. Difference in my case is it still works. I have decided to wait until the weather changes an the send it for the up-grade. If I gently work the water under the face plate towards the sensitivity adjustment, I can get drops of water to surface on the top of the face plate.

I am a little disappointed since this is the second time it's been to the factory -- but the buzz is the up-grade is worth the trouble.

Sounds as if the coil connector shorted. Water didn't actually get into the unit, just into the plug and shorted it out. Since the coil connectors are so hard to actually tighten down, you don't know if you got a good seal there or not. The connectors and o rings probably need regular maintenance and checking prior to any entry into water.

Good luck,
Mike

I would send it back now if you have another backup. Otherwise, if is still working now, use it until the season is over.

Good luck!

John

I agree!! Make sure and put a little silicone grease on the O-ring, not much, just a thin coat. Also, if I tighten my headphones TOO tight, when I dunk it, the sound goes away. Everythings got quirks I suppose

A couple of weeks ago I submerged my wife's AT Pro in the Turon River near Hill End in NSW. It was only submerged about 6 inches for a couple of minutes. The result was a lot of condensation under the screen.
I Emailed Myra @ Garretts & she advised me to send it in. Today as I was packing the unit for the return trip to Garrett, I noticed that there was enough water under the screen for a goldfish to swim in.
I've had several other brand of detectors that worked OK. The Garrett on the other hand is our first Garrett machine. I purchased it in February this year & had to return it soon after due to a Ground Ballance problem - return postage to Garrett for repairs was $45.
The return postage to Garrett this time was $88. I did return the whole unit this time with a request that Garrett does the upgrades & makes sure that the repaired unit IS WATERPROOF. So far our experience with the AT Pro has been very disappointing.
I must point out though, the service from Garrett has been excellent.
If I get the unit back & have further problems, the unit will be replaced with an Excallibur & rule 303 or 12g will be applied to the Pro as I have already spent about 25% of the units initial cost on return postage cost for repairs.
