Self Defense?

How do you protect yourself from anything during this hobby? Since it is mostly a solitary hobby and we are sometimes 'out of view' what do you do?
I carry a .380 semi-auto on my ankle. I'm sorry if this post has gone out of bounds. HH. Matt

If you're hunting in a bad area, think about asking a buddy to hunt with you. You already have one weapon to defend yourself (pistol) and two others, e.g., digger and shovel. Do not use your headphones so you can hear what's going on around you and scan the area every few minutes so you know who's around. Make sure that you let someone know where you are hunting, in case something does happen and always carry your cell phone. If anyone asks if you found something, do not tell them about anything of value.

I carry because of my environment. I have found very scary things along my travels. If you really want to know...pm me. HH. Matt

I'll carry a pistol in questionable areas, but normally I just keep my Lesche in my left hand and a grumpy look on my face. I've worked in some very shady areas in the past and have never really had any serious issues. I think a lot of it has to do with keeping your guard up and not looking like an easy target.

Matthias if your thinking someone/something is gonna sneak up on you, there are headphones that have one earcup, rattlers I think they are called, those might help you. Ive run across some spots where people have tents set up and are living in the woods, I usually dont go back to those places:detecting:

I'm interested in hearing about your scary. I go out alone alot and normally don't worry too much but there have been times when the hairs stood up and I didn't even stop at the place.

HH
Mike

I like a double zippered pouch one for finds and the other for my handgun. If a stranger comes up you are more prepared. Does your machine not go off swinging that close to your ankle? It is a shame we even have to worry about these things. HH :minelab:

Hey there. My detector does not pick up my weapon on my ankle. Some of the scary things I've encountered in the middle of the woods include latex gloves, used duct tape, half used vasoline jar, polaroids of naked men and women (different sites), hobo camps, duffle bags full of something, etc. Once I encountered a dude with a Pit Bull and he could hardly keep it in control- that dog wanted a piece of me and my dog. Another time I found myself in the middle of a domestic dispute between man and woman. That dude was so crazy...I just tried to disappear into the brush. I'm always looking over my should as I think we should all do. HH. Matt

I am a large dude, and I hunt with another large dude. We also hunt with my sister so there is usually 3 of us. We live in a low low crime area way up in the U.P. of Michigan. Most people up here are friendly. We don't have crackheads or bums to worry about. And if someone did step up to us they better be pretty tough. My brother and I are large and not afraid to throw down if the need arises. I hate violence, but will defend myself and family with all I have.

I am a very short dude. I'm not a fighter. I have no problem running away from danger in most situations. I carry my piece around town for the most part. Carrying while detecting is just second nature. My one detecting buddy just retired last week so I hope to get out with him more. HH. Matt

If you are going to do it, do it right. Take that piece out of your zippered pouch, and put it some place easily accessible.
