I have been using that 12X10 SEF coil and have only dug 3 silver coins. Kinda frustrated. I know I am hunting in areas where they are so that's not an issue. So, today, I came home and did an air test. I was at +3 and on iron id. I took out a mercury dime and passed it below the coil. If I passed it directly under the coil, it would read a 79. If I passed it about 5-6 inches away, it would read 35. Another inch away would read a 14! WHAT THE HECK!!! When air testing, I had it on the LOCK position. Could some of you who use the 12X10 do an air test on a mercury dime and let me know if you get the same results? I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks in advance. How the heck are you supposed to dig silver with such low VDI's? I guess I'm just wondering if something is wrong. Most likely the user...

Hmmm not sure whats up with your equipment but my mxt with the 12x10 excellorater coil is aok

You might have a defective coil, I would think an air test should be around 10 inches with solid ID and 12 with a jumpy ID.

Okay... I'll call Kellyco. Maybe it is defective. Hmmmmm. Thanks for the responses.

Someone else in this forum was saying his 10x12 only gave a "VERY SLIGHT WHISPER at 6 inches" with a dime and also says "It does a decent job with depth". http://www.findmall.com/read.php?25,1671213 That sounds consistant with your experience. I'm not sure a dime is big enough for this big coil to see at more than 7 inches. Big coils require big targets to bounce enough signal back to detect. Thats why gold prospectors use tiny coils to see tiny targets. Big coils can't see small targets very well, and the small targets they can kind of see don't show up at great depths. I'm confused about the different reviews. Some say 12 inches some say 6 inches max. And very slight whisper usually means no VDI but just a whisper so your 7 inch test showed +14 which is not just a whisper. You have a better experience than the one linked above. Possible results and expectations are not the same but I would like to know how deep this coil can find dimes. It would be sweet if you could dig dimes at a foot! :yikes:
