SEF question

Hello,

I recently baught a SEF 12x10 for my explorer 2; my problem is that the coil gives me a high tone each [and almost every] time i bump the side against somethinng... how far from normal is this? Could there something be wrong with it so that it would affect its performance? I have had it sent back to detech for a review but they said it was ok.

Maybe try turning your sensitivity down a notch or two ? My 10X12 will false if I bump something a little too hard, but it is not extremely sensitive.

I tried turning both the sensitivity and the gain down lower, but the symtop still persists... Could some kind of circuit flaw be doing this? Or, would a circuit flaw render the coil unusable?

Are you sure it is just with this coil? Have you put a different coil back on and tested that? Just a thought, maybe something loosened up when you were changing coils. I just bought the 10x12 and did notice that it gave a signal when bumped, but I didn't think it was a problem. As McDave said you have to whack it fairly good... I really have only used the coil a couple times though. Your coil wire isn't flopping around, is it?
Good luck and HH - Robin

What are you running your sensitivity and gain at? It is a large coil and its sensitive. Try placing your coil on the ground and turning on the detector. That sometimes helps me if im running hot on mineralized beaches. Since its been to the company i assume anything between the coil and cover is clean. Check the connection at the box.... mine came loose once and did that. Mine also dont like water running off of it.... like from damp grass. BUT... best coil ive ever used and it dont come off my machine.

Mine will false when snagging on a root stub, or when rolling over the top of say, pine cones or walnuts. I run high sensitivity.

Mine falses too when bumped hard, but it is not a problem, I think it is just the nature of these coils to be a little touchy. I love mine, very good coil.
