Greetings one and all! I'm new to this forum and am looking for info on 5''excelorator coil. I got one a year or so ago for my gti 1500 and still dont have a handle on how it works best! what am i doing wrong??? P.S. Hope y'all got dirty fingers!!

Welllllll, first of all, it would help to know what it is NOT doing. It might not be you, at all.

I do know the GTI model coils have a third winding in them to facilitate the Imaging function.
I know this sounds like a dumb question, but does it have that winding?

SEF search coils are "Symmetrical Electromagnetic Field" or "Butterfly" as they are called. I was not aware that there was a 5" SEF search coil for GTI series and I thought that I had every search coil available for GTI series (except for the NEL Tornado search coils). I do have the regular old 5"DD Excelerator that I bought from KellyCo some years back. There is no imaging with this search coil. No big deal. There is no depth reading either. Everything reads as "Size B at 2 inches". At least that's how mine works. Max out your sensetivity and dig anything that beeps. This is one HOT little search coil. It gets great depth and great target seperation. You can get some good targets that are mixed in amongst trash/iron.:detecting:
Feel free to ask for advice at anytime. Happy Hunting.:)

In other words, an overlapped "DD" coil... kinda. It most likely has a slightly wider "hot strip" down the middle, and may be a little better at pinpointing for it. Im certain the spearation is good, too. It also is reputed to be somewhat deeper, more stable and covers a bigger footprint similar to an elliptical, as you say. with a piece of
'Seems to be proprietary to Kellyco, too.
So you give up all the features the Garrett is known for to use it, right? Depth is no biggie, as you can always use the old "coil lift" method to determine that. Discrimination is not affected, I suppose, so just set it at foil and forget it. Cover the display with a mask of some kind (since it is pretty much useless) listen to the tones and just do as you say - dig. Hey, it's how we did it in the old days!

I can't see how there can be any Imaging function with it, however, and you verify that.

But we still dont know what the OP's problem is.

Ah! Enlightenment!! thanks Metalhead! I think you pretty well covered it! crank up sens.!! i did find a little silver ring with it on fri.!! only about 2'' deep! thanx again.
