SEF coil and Insight meter queston ? again

Hey all i think we hashed over this once before one way or the other , i had Joe P put a Insight meter in my Sov.GT i really like it since i have not mastered the differance in tones yet but iam getting there slowly , Joe told me he is not sure yet why his meter will not work with the SEF coil he has to get one and take it a part and see why ? i have a 10x12 SEF on my DFX great coil it works fantastic !! i only just noticed on the coil,s tag it says in very small letters Designed together with Kellyo USA , what i need to know is if i get a 12x15 SEF coil for my GT will the coil work with the meter installed as if there was no meter at all i can just rely on tones and sounds which is ok with me ? so i called Kellyo and spoke to a sales rep. and explained to him my queston , all he could say is he had no idea what i was talking about :ranting: he said as far as he knows the SEF is just as compatable as the Minelab stock coils and there should be no differance . If any one has the meter and a SEF coil i would like to hear there comments i really want to get that coil for my GT TY Jim

I have a 10x12 SEF that I use with a Ron's meter. It works great and was calibrated right out of the box. As a matter of fact the meter is calibrated giving a 180 on a quarter with all the coils I own. Sunray S-8, Tornado stock, and the 10x12 SEF. There is an internal pot adjustment which I have not even had to touch. I guess the most simple way to see if your insight works with the SEF is to see if it gives a 180 on a quarter. I am sure you have all-ready tried that. I looked into the insight. But since I never hip mount unless I am going in the water with my GT I felt the insight is worthless to me. I am not saying the insight is garbage cause it is not. It just did not fit my detecting set up.

Ron,s meter work,s just as well the reason i choose it is less wires to deal with, all my other coils a quarter will show a 180 on the meter, what i will do is get the SEF 12x15 coil and see what happens if the meter is not showing target numbers so be it ill be learning the sounds other then that it works fine on my other coils Thanks Jason  Jim

The SEF coils will work with the Insight meter installed, it's just that the meter won't give you target IDs. Somebody sent me a PM a while back saying Insight's designer might have a fix for it. It involved putting a jumper on one of the coil connector pins if I remember right but as far as I know nobody has tried it. I suspect that what he's doing is grounding two of the ground pins together on the coil connector. If I remember right the coil connector has 2 or 3 ground lines. What might be happening is the SEF coil isn't grounding all of those pins and the Insight meter needs them to be grounded to work with it. That's a total guess on my part, though. I'd email Insight's designer and ask him about that.

What are you going to use the 15x12 for? I'd only buy one if I were a beach hunter or hunted large plowed fields. In my opinion the 12x10 is a much better coil for old coin hunting. Seems to get deeper than the 15x12 is my soil. The coverage of the 12x10 is also a nice improvement over stock, although of course the 15x12 was even better at covering large areas.

Jim, I have Joe's insight meter on my Sovereign GT with the SEF 15x12 coil and the meter does not work this coil. I wish someone could find a fix so it would work on the GT and let the forum know how to do it for sure, GH, Don

Don this all i have sent to me on the fix , i opened my GT control box very carefully and saw that there is a blue cover plate over the Insight meter 4 small screws , once removed you have excess to the back of meter all you need is a jumper from a old computer card shown in diagram 2 , which i do not have but at least i know how to get to the fix next time i open it then ill have that jumper to go over the J-1 pins and see if it works .
