(SEF 8x6) Just a thought for all to ponder :surprised:

I have been watching the ongoing info dealing with the SEF 8x6 coil and am starting to wonder if there could be any biased info.Do you think it would get a lot more positive or perhaps less lackluster revues if it were availible for all dealers to stock and sell? All I can do is report my own personal experiences with the 8x6 here in South West Missouri using the E-Trac.I can state with complete honesty that it will seperate and hit on desireable targets located extremely close to junk targets such as old rusted nails, wire and that sort of thing with better results than the exceptional but much larger Pro coil.

Even if you swing fast, slow or moderatly the results have been the same. The results I am refering to are all on targets at 7" or less here in my ground at my sites. When targets get much past the 7" mark the 8x6 looses it's edge for obvious reasons.Actually 7" is very good depth on dime and penny sized targets here with the much larger Pro coil getting around 9" to 10" max on said targets.

My soil is quite mineralized and I am sure if you were in milder soils depth results would increase .My Sunray X5 coil will work about equal to the 6x8 except it has about one inch less inground depth and much less coverage per swing for obvious reasons.I believe the X5 will seperate even a tiny bit better if you have the patience to work it extremely slow in the ultra heavy trash.

I am not a dealer of any brand of detectors or accesories and this is my unbiased statement based on extensive infield use of both the E-Trac and Pro coil since the first week each was released and then the X5 coil and now the SEF 8x6 coil for the last several weeks.I have posted many of my finds useing all of the above coils and if not so busy with my work these last two weeks would have posted even more:rant:,Ray.

RayMo: As far as biased, I purchased the 6x8 for the reason of separation in heavy trash, I have taken it to 3 different locations each having different soil conditions from loam,to heavy iron base red clay. Tomorrow to another site which has a black mineralized type. No bias wanted to see if it seperates better than the standard stock coil, that is my goal, there are two noted changes with the SEF coil, loss of depth and readings scale changes some. I really think at this time the stock coil with use and practice will give it all but I am trying to be UNBIASED in the use. TY Hardrock

Ray thanks for your candid and honest reply. I suspect that the limited availability of the coil does make it more attractive......I bought one,but have noy used it yet.....the 12 x 16 or what ever it is did not find anything for me that the Pro Coil missed though it does cover more area. Would like to see an 8" Pro coil, though I doubt they will deliver any time in the future. Hey, Ray do you still have the V3? My schedule has been rough too and haven't been able to do any real detecting in a while now.....

Ive never tried the 6x8 s.e.f..But I do use my 18x15 alot.I have had great succes going over areas i used my pro coil on.Ive used it on my Se and now my E-trac for the last few weeks.Maybe for me the fact it is so much larger..deep signals are abit louder and clearer. It seperates very well,,and its BIG.Ive not only found deeper targets that maybe the pro couldnt reach or give a ggood signal on..But ive found shallower targets that were surrounded by iron .Now I do really Like my Pro coil ...It runs very smooth and is a good all around coil. But I personaly would prefer the 6x8 sef in place of the pro if those were my choices.I actually think the best coil for ME to run as a goto everywhere coil will be the 10x12 s.e.f. Thats my next purchase .The 18x15 is a tad big to go everywhere, and its sometimes sens to high emi in some of the parks I Hunt.Ive a few vids on Youtube with my full digs using the s.e.f..I believe LaDigger also does, and treasurefiend.Every area is diffrent tho and we will get diffrent results sometimes.I enjoy you posting your personal results,it helps folks out.HH

I have the 8x6 and my hunting partner runs the 8in sunray, I really dont see much difference in them as far as depth and separation. it really depends on how exp you are and the ground. There about equal but that's my opinion.

Not sure if its just my 8x6 but the cable is a real pain to push up the rods, the cable seems almost to thick compared to my other coils.

I've used mine the last couple of trips. To be honest, there's nothing about it I dislike. The volume is a little low. It's not my headphones, they're fine with other detectors and the Pro coil. Targets are just quieter with this coil unless they're right on the surface to 2" down. So far the trash separation doesn't seem too much better than the Pro coil, but the smaller size alone means less trash in your detection field. Pinpoints very well though. Better than the Pro coil IMO. I haven't found anything good deeper than 5" yet, but that's mostly just the area I live in. Coins don't sink very deep here.

the 8X6 is a good little coil and is great when hunting where there is some electrical interference, but the 6" Excelerator is a tad deeper.

Keep the reports coming.I always say the more info the better. And I think if Minelab would make a 8" Pro coil that was of the same caliber as the 11" It would be the ultimate in heavy trash.
Gota get back to work but looking forward to more input from other 8x6 users,Ray.

I have tried them all and Minelab has the 7.5 coil which is the only one I still have and they still make them, don't think they will make a 8". The 7.5" just locks on easier (more forgiving with speed of swing) where as the other small coils you have to sometime work them (changing speed and direction) before they lock on.... Happy Trail 2 U

many countless hours on both I can now say that the 6 x 8 handles interference better than the 6"...but I found more 8" to 9" deep coins on a consistent basis with the 6" than with the 6 x 8 SEF.

The 6 x 8 SEF is rock solid in any ground for me here in IL and also handles EMI unbelievabley well. I have MANY sites where the 6 x 8 SEF coil is the only "usuable" coil at because of EMI...and I mean MANY.

It is defiinitely a keeper coil and found a few coins I missed with even the 6" Excelerator at some of the bad EMI sites I'm speaking of.

It has a solid place in my arsenal because of how stable it is...and it cuts through trash like a knife...but if the EMI isn't bad...I opt for the 6" Excelerator because I can't tell you the number of coins that little critter has found me at depths of 9".

There isn't any bias in my opinion...only 100's of hours of honest personal experience with both coils over 100's of actual in field targets.

I don't even use any 8" coils any more because the 6" Excelerator coil gets the same depth for me...along with separating much better than those 8" coils.

The 6 x 8 coil separates even better...and also handles EMI even better for me...but the depth edge goes to the 6" Excelerator.

My 8x6 coil is tough to get thru the bottom rod-but the 6" will hardly even go thru the top rod also. I'm almost afraid I'll pull the connector off with the string.

now keep in mind I only just got both the 6-inch EXcelerator and the 6 X 8 SEF butterfly coils last week. I tested both in my coin garden and found the 6-inch separated better. But my 6 X 8 got a bit more depth on targets larger than a dime. So I headed out this weekend to the local "bottle cap park" and the butterfly strapped to the Etrac. Long story short...... I had so much fun with the butterfly that I haven't even put the 6-inch round coil on yet. Hoping it cools off a little bit this evening so I can give it go! Here are some of my finds with the butterfly, this past weekend. HH Randy

Now that is the kind of info we can use. And it would be nice if more people using these coils on Explorers and Safaris/Quattros would chime in.
