SEF 12x15 vs Tornado 10" for Depth

Tricky question since it depends on the area. Targets good and bad as well as mineralization play a part in detph.... or lack there of. Deeper coils hit deeper iron and tagets that can send a larger coil into coil shut down reducing depth. Larger coils take in more soil for processing. In a trashy area the 10 can do just as well if not better because of its ability to separate and process targets. On a beach with a lot more open area the larger coil will out perform the smaller one provided you dont have to reduce the sensitivity.

I am told that Usually the larger coil will get greater depth. However as dewcon said it depends on a lot of factors. I have a batch of coils and all of them work well depending on soil type, mineralization, trash concentration etc. I especially like the way I can pinpoint a target with the SEF 10X12, I find that I am much more accurate pinpointing with that coil than any of the others that I own. With any of my coils I rarely find anything that is more than 8 inches deep except on the beach.

I believe Joan Allen did a comparison once of the 10X12 and 10X15.... wasnt much difference in depth in mineralized ground.

The tornado coil is a great coil which gets great depth on the sov.I've tried various larger coils on my sov and to be honest I have always gone back to the tornado.

As a matter of fact, I get INCREDIBLE depth with my CoinSearch coil which only has inner windings of 7 1/4"! The largest coil that I feel is practical though on the Sov is the 10" Tornado coil. I find that anything larger tends to hurt depth because it struggles with too much ground matrix (falsing and emi chatter). That is why I only have the 10" Tornado and Coinsearch now. The only coil I will be adding for extreme trash separation is the Sunray S-5 Intruder 5.5" coil. The CoinSearch coil remains my main hunting coil on land. If I needed it for mostly water hunting, I would go with the 8" Tornado as it is essentially the same, guts wise, as the CoinSearch. HH George Fatizzi

Even though I haven't used the 12X15 SEF I think for general use the Tornado 10 inch coil would be my choice. The larger coil probably won't respond to dime size targets as well and may not get the depth.Form my experience larger coils will require a lower sensitivity setting, slower sweep, more difficult to pinpoint target, and the bulk/weight will cause fatigue and frustration. In the 10X12 SEF vs the Tornado 10 inch category the SEF does have better depth with my comparison but I think for me the Tornado IDs better with nickles and bottle caps. Also the Tornado pinpoints better and feels lighter. But my choice between these coils I would choose the SEF 10X12. Good Luck HH Ron
