Seeking advice on finding the deep stuff

Hey, everyone,

I've been playing around with the V for 3 months now and I don't seem to get any signals deeper than 6 inches, and those come only rarely. I'm guessing that there are treasures lurking down below that level. I specifically look for old coins.

Here are some of the things I've tried:

From the Hi-Pro program, go to Transmit Frequency and set it on 2.5. Set the RX gain to whatever the detector recommends. Push up the discrimination and all metal.

Following my interpretation of Jimmy Sierra's advice (see related post) LOWER the RX gain below what is recommended by the detector, and push up the discrimination and all metal. (At least I think that's what he said!)

Following a friend's advice, LOWER the RX gain below what is recommended by the detector and LOWER the discrimination and all metal, and LEARN TO LISTEN BETTER.

Following the detector's advice, use the pre-set programs and don't change anything.

Use "Deep Silver" and do all of the above instead of "Hi-Pro."

No, dont use "Deep Silver," you don't need to hear those low tones, they will just confuse you.

Now, out of all of those, I'm not really sure if one is the answer, or if there is something better out there.

So, esteemed Forum contributors, you of great V3 experience and success, please let me know....how do YOU get the most depth for finding those silver coins that have sunk 8 to 10 inches into the earth?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and reply to this.

Mike

Their is so much you can do with this unit it is almost mind boggling....So first expand your mind think positive believe in your self and your gear.....Rule number one!

you can make a sound for any target from -95 to +95 you can accept all targets and assign tones for groups AT WILL for high value targets.....Think out of the box

the unit is New................ most people are hunting Hi pro or CJ , deep silver...... I personally and this just OLD weird JIM... Here not your local dealer....or electron guru....

Just a digger talking to another digger for what it is worth.....I like it open... Frogs to the wall....small grunts on iron accept all of it .....keep it simple turn off the wireless... puts some decent gold pro timberwolfs or gray ghost on hard wired.....ground balance and turn tracking OFF .......focus on the things that count your AC, DC gains.... modulation off.... tones on ....I really do not like VCO but last time I had to run it to keep my tones I will have to study that more......I like sizing deep targets in true all metal you get an ear for it....that most people walk right over....the O scope is pretty cool but .....the three bars tell you plenty at a glance the one closest to the right may tip you off to the type of metal which fall in to some groups.....that with the sound or the lack of sound will tell you with the depth gauge weather it may be worthy of further investigation........ME.... if it is faint and it is a place I can use my shovel its.... coming out .....keep the site clean and Lean.....things that count...... focus..... tweak your recovery speed know when and why to speed it up and when to slow it down .....You aint going to plow forty acres in 3 hours with...... you the mule.... and your shovel.......... read the legend of the site become one with it and your machine....kinda like a DETECT-ZEN state of being......the Vision is limitless in its capacity to implement your treasure Mojo..... so do NOT be afraid to mess it up and change things .....that is how you learn ....you can always do a reset.... and jot down what worked for you....... where you made the wrong turn.... that took you to Cincinnati.... keep a sheet that has your golden plays...... every day is a detect-zen Super Bowl.......and finally my last penny and a half.....950....nice if you have one like me that you can bump on up..... on After burner.....when you are feeling Froggy .......but do not pass that tip around.....it may slow somebody down with all the over lappings of the coil and they may start finding all that secret deep stuff that others walk over.....that more seasoned detectorist seem to have a pension to find....

Finally You are Captain James Kirk and the Spectra is the Star Ship Enterprise so go boldly where no man has gone before ......hit warp 7 with that stock program to the point that it is a total entity of itself ...... OK Mr. Spock set course for starbase 12......

Happy Trails
Jim Pugh

Ps I am sure the wireless phones are Great I have a set... I'm just old school maybe some day soon I will warp Em up! the point is to assume nothing and try every thing ...wear it OUT!

Between Jim's sharp, humorous, but "warped"-speed advise is a lot of good information. For those of you that had problems following along, I'll try to simplify things.

Every detector sold does not come with the most important component for getting the finds that just seems to blow everyone else away. The finds that the "Zen Masters" bring home from a day or weekend hunt. The pocket full of silver found at amazing depths, 1700's coppers, breast plates from the Civil war and the like. -----------Experience------------ The machine, any detector, can only do so much and the rest is up to the operator. Most of the "Zen Masters" on any of these forums are very experienced detectorists with 20 - 30 years or more of trial and error, listening and digging and most of them just has that gut feeling that the little "bip" he just heard is something good way down there.

If you are digging 6 inch targets Mike, you are well on your way to 7" inch targets and then 8" and so forth. Learn you detector, listen what it is telling you, hunt where the targets you are looking for are likely to be and dig, dig, dig. The process is called gaining experience.

Well put Larry. I addition to that I personally find note taking(either physical or mental...whatever works for you)very helpful. We all get very excited when we find a great find, but try and keep enough composure to take these "notes" I'm not just referring to the obvious ones like where you hunted that day or what part of the field/beach you were on, but thing that are a little less obvious like:

1. Soil conditions-dry? moist? soaked? compact and tight or loose and clumpy just to name a few.
2. specific program/settings used-we have all done it, ya find something awesome then for 1 reason or another you make a field change, or 2 , or 3! note your settings and try to develop a pattern that shows what program/settings are right for YOU and/or that specific area.
3. signal specifics- not only depth, but how was the audio? video? and in the case of the V3, the analyze screen?
4. coil used- needless to say not every coil is going to perform the same under the same conditions. I personally have found that at some of my spots coin "x" works better than coil "y" depending on #1 and #2 mentioned above meaning I may use a coil one day at a location where I used a different coil just a week ago!

Bottom line is attention to detail is what separates the often frustrated hunter from the guys that seem to pull treasure out of nowhere!

Dig a hole no more than an 2 inches across and deep as needed, put in the silver dime and add an inch of dirt at a time and pack it hard, then the next inch and so forth. Then, soak it down good. Even a dime/rust nail combo is good. A test garden will train you to recognize what coins at depth sound like. Obviously they have not been there for a hundred years but its a great teaching method. Even one silver dime at say 7 inches can be used to try different settings to determine what sounds best to your ears HH...:detecting:
