Secrets of Gold Jewelry Hunting!

Well-known member
Tesoro is known for finding gold jewelry, especially chains, which are extremely hard to detect. Just a few observations from using my Tesoros in past years. First and foremost - dig the junk! Run your disc just at the iron setting, even if there is moderate trash. You will have to dig lots of junk, aluminum foil is really aggrivating, but once in awhile you will pull a good one out. If you have fairly cleaned out an area, then run your disc half way between all metal and iron. This seems to be where I find the chains in the region of discrimination on Tesoros. My main machine for jewelry hunting is the Cibola with cleansweep coil. Preferred hunting grounds are soccer fields.

Happy Hunting

Where do you typically find the most jewlery would you say? I have just recently started hitting soccer fields and playgrounds. I used to only do ghost towns and old homesteads. Thanks!

Thanks for the information ! I usually run the discrimination a little higher and dig all the pull tabs etc.. I'll lower it a little more and see what I come up with. :clapping: I don't mind digging trash, some of my best finds have been in the trash:thumbup:
One thing I have never found is a small gold chain, maybe my luck will change:tesoro:

The big secret to finding jewelry especially small gold chains is the Compadre. Not a better detector made for locating jewelry.

YEP! VERY Tiny little gold. :wiggle:

Heck in my area using your thoughts would never get off my knees digging but certainly a truism as gold chains usually come in in iron area but a trick with a Tesoro is iron will chatter and the earring or small chain with hit solid..As far as the hotspot its the foil region as approx. 1/3 of gold rings lost are thin gold womans rings some with nice stones and that where they hit in the foil region...

Thanks for chiming in there, ole buddy. I sometimes feel a little strange talking about the Compadre and comparing it with the other great lineup of detectors. I still can't get over the fact that I found my fine gold chain WHILE I was discing out paper clips and hairpins and my favorite lil' Silver umax would pick it up in a/m mode. Even more amazing I found an ink pen refill because it had a metal ball bearing in the tip.:crylol:

Do any of you feel that there is really NO secret to finding gold jewelry?

Isn't the "secret," really that you just have to hunt the right areas, put in the time to learn your machine and dig targets till you have calluses?

Yep! You can't find gold jewelry that's not there to find. Also you can't find gold jewelry if you disc it out or have a detector that doesn't hit very well on gold.

I will be first in line to purchase a detector that can tell the difference between gold and junk.

Until then, I'm swinging something light and digging all good hits.

Oops. Meant my Silver umax and other 4 detectors WOULD NOT pick up the gold chain in a/m mode. Sorry. The Compadre also double blipped, much like a coin on edge, on a small gold ring that was vertically upright in a tot lot that I had been over many years. As tabman said, there is no secret but the machine and the user.

Lets face it guys and gals only true way is a shovel but too much digging no matter how neat hurts the grass especially in hot weather so learn your unit..Tesoro's especially have audio variances to a trained ear and the average gold ring weighs much more than the trash that imitiates it so do some testing as even if you cut down the odds in one half your helping your back, knees and the landscape and just have a lot more time to swing instead of digging the obvious junk...Again no way 100 percent can you be sure but you can sure cut down the odds..Beg, borrow or buy a jewelers scale and weigh a gold ring and a tab or a piece of foil and perhaps a light will go on as there has to be a difference even if its small....but its there and those that experiment get the gold rings without all the excessive digging...

The only way to get the gold is by running your discrimination low.

When I'm out with the Compadre, I typically run it right near foil because my areas are so trashy anything less would drive me nuts.

I know I'm losing some gold, but them's the breaks. It seems really incredible just how small a target this Compadre will pick up.

I wonder if the Cibola is as good at picking up gold as the Compadre...

I have found over a hundred gold rings. The big secret is location, location, location. You go where gold rings are likely lost.#1 is in the water of swimming areas With a water detector and scoop.. If you can't do that #2 is areas outside swimming areas where people lay their bankets to sit and watch. #3 is sports fields. Where people get all excited about the game and start throwing their hands up and yelling for their favorite team. Then there are volleyball courts, tot lots, school grounds ect. Most gold rings lost are found in the foil section of your detector. Let's face it. Who wears the most gold rings. Women. Usually several. Usually small thin gold rings. Most men wear only wedding bands which they could not get off if they wanted. Some men wear other rings but most only wedding bands.A lot of people think they must start digging every pull tab where ever they happened to be to find gold rings.I do no have the time or the back to dig every pull tab. In pull tab heaven I get very selective. I dig only the nickel and foil.I really like the Tesoro Golden since the tones have been seperated. I will not get all the gold rings but I will get quiet a few in far less time..In volleyball courts, tot lots, sports fields I dig it all. This only my style for finding gold rings. Others may disagree. If you have the time and the back to dig every tab, more power to you. In time you will find gold rings no doubt. As the saying goes ......He who digs the most......finds the most.....Jack

Also to mention All the white gold rings I have found were in the foil section of my detector. Also all platinum is also found in the foil section.....Jack
