Second Time To Find Ben Down In A Hole

Sooper Dave

Well-known member
Between the rain, work and Christmas activities, I have not had a chance to get out and detect. I had about two hours to go today, so I went to a place that is beside where an old school house was. I got permission from the home owner and was told it has been hunted many times by many folks. So I went around some old trees on the far end of the lot and found a few wheat pennies. I then went around the house and I get a very nice signal in the front yard. The Etrac was showing 1-44 solid with a jump to 2-44 at about 4". I know those numbers should be a half, but I have seen those numbers before and turn out to be anything but. I pop my plug, pinpoint the hole, scoop out another handful of dirt ... and surprise this time it's a half, a 1963d Franklin Half! This is my second Franklin, I found a 1960 with my XLT in August this year, this is my first half with my Etrac. I also dug a Rutherford B. Hayes token from the 50's and a cool "Good Luck" token from The Nashville American Newspaper. I can't find any info on the token, but the paper was under this name from 1894 - 1910. Too bad the weather can't stay this way all winter!

Great job on the Franklin! I'm sure you didn't mind helping Ben out of that hole. Way to go! Just remember where there's wheats there's silver, HH, Mike

Nice Franklin half!

I found a 1953D Franklin last Friday at an old fairgrounds where I live (the area also was a dirt track grass parking lot until the late 60's). Unfortunately I nicked mine on the rim.

I was hunting with another ETrac user at the time and got him to come sweep the signal in this hot ground and it was bouncing all over the place (1-47, 3-45, 12-46 plus other weird ID numbers) but the tone was all good. This half was the 20th silver coin (for me and 3 other hunting buddies) in about 1.5 weeks from this spot that we can only hunt during business hours (behind locked gate all other times).

It does feel good to see big silver in the hole and I hope you find many more!

Great finds - congrats !

Thanks for the comments. I didn't think the house was very old, I found out it was built in 1975. Just goes to show you never know what your going to find. The house is in an old "depot" town next to a railroad. There is a few old houses, churches and shops from the 1800's to early 1900's still there and I hope to get to hunt some of them.

very cool finds!
