Second Outing with the X30

Went to the running track behind my place for 2 hours this afternoon. It rained the last couple days and it helps on the digging and targets I think. Had a really hard time with it today because of the trash on the edges of the track. In the center it rang out pretty loud and clear on pennies, dimes and quarters.

There certainly needs to be a smaller coil for this machine. There were so many tones and numbers flashing around I couldn't even begins to separate what it was trying to tell me. I decided to disc out everything under 28 and try it. It still seemed to jump around on the VDI screen and depth meter. Of course without a manual GB in our mineralized soil that couldn't have helped either.

I tried slowing down the sweep to a crawl and found it trying to separate targets. Some as close as 1" tones apart but I couldn't get a fix on what they were. Out of curiosity, I dug a few targets that tones high, had a VDI of between 24-36 consistently and found them to be pennies from 87-2002. So i imagine the corrosion didn't help with the stabilization either.

In the center of the track field there was hardly any trash. The machine did really well here and I found several dimes, a quarter and some pennies. Most of the pennies stayed in the 36 range but would jump down to 28 some times and 32 others. All the dimes locked in at 36 and hardly moved.

I planned ahead of time to put solid targets in one pocket and iffy targets in another. When I got home I found that all but one of the pennies with solid locks of 28 were as follows. 1964,65,71,73,79,81 and a new surface 2002. All the iffy pennies were above 82(zinc) and some were corroded.

I also learned that solid lock 44s are mostly pop cans. I got a solid lock on 6 of them about 6=7" down. Wasn't sure what a 44 was but it must indicate mostly larger targets.

One other problems I had with the machine was using the pin pointer. I have gotten used to using the no Motion Pinpointing on my other machines and love the feature. I also use it to check the hole after digging out some dirt for the target. (560 coming next week some this won;t be necessary now) But when I laid the X30 down in Pinpointing mode it just kept on screaming in my ears. I am use to the tone to stop when the machine is laid down. It did this on almost every dig.

Is this an indication that it needs tuned, better GB or what. I wasn't around power lines, fences or metal poles. Not sure what causes it but it annoying.

One other thing that surprised me was, I found two large bolts about 5/8" x 1-1/2" long that locked solid at 36. They were about 4-5" down and didn't ring once on the low tone or in the lower numbers. I also got a thumb tack at about 5" down that rang 36 on the meter. took a long time to find it but I did. Thought it would ID in about 18-24.

Sorry for the long post, but thought this information might help and had some questions. I did manage 11 pennies, 6 dimes and a quarter too.

Sounds like you had an interesting outing, Tink, to say the least.

Yup, if you leave the pinpoint on and it is near metal, it'll let you know. As for the large bolt, if oxidized some, they can ring true as a coin. Same for Mountain Dew cans; got one at 8" in the backyard tonight, and thought for sure I had a dime. And being that deep it didn't profile large when I swept around the signal; so I got fooled.

Zinc doesn't lock on well, for some reason. But I usually dig them anyway, in case an IH is hiding down there somewhere. Plus I'll have some practice coins for the tumbler Santa is supposed to bring me:clapping:

Keep hanging in there; that X-Terra does get smarter with use. I'm just beginning to learn that myself!!

Thanks Dick, yep I found a M> Dew can today myself about 8" down and it rang as a solid 36 (dime). I had a better time with the machine today also. Came home with 5q, 7D,2N and about 10 pennies. I only found 2 PT and small lawnmover can slaw from the football field. Thought I found a silver dime, it was shiney coming out of the hole at about 5", it was close to, 1965. No jwelery but I sure have pulled alot of coins out of that ballfield that has been hunted to death by allot of people. 35 coins in 4 hours for me.

I dug a large rusty washer today thay came in as a coin.It musta measured two inches across.Yep, and I dug severaL crushed aluminum cans.Got 4.23 in almost 3 hrs, inluding 23 dimes.Rusty nickels sometimes bounce out of the 9-12 range as high as 18 that one did today.I also dug a rusty clad dime down about 6 inches that bounced between 42 and 45, mostly 45 if I recall right.Good luck with your xterra 30 and keep us posted on your adventures:))

I didn't see any nickels in most of the posts. My 30 will not lock on my nickel in my test garden. Out of the ground it hits 12 lock. But in my garden it has a broken tone and bounces from 8 to 16. It sure doesn't sound like a coin. Other units will pick up the nickel no problem. Is it just me? Test garden is 2 years old and coins are 4 inches deep.

I haven't tried the X 30, but if that area has been hit before. It seems to be doing something right, judging from how many coins you dug with it from there. I'd venture to guess that the more you use it the better a machine it will come to be, and the more you'll come to like it.
Am I ever wrong? uh...well...uh...I mean...naaaah ! Great field test and report. WTG!! HH

Khouse I'd be tempted to probe that nickel, just to see how it feels. It might have shifted more towards vertical. Then too, it's always possible that there's something else down there in bed with it, that the other machine didn't pickup on when you created your test garden. Just a thought. HH

rvb you could be right. i can decrease the sesitivity on the 30 and it still give a consistant broken tone. the other detectors pick it up fine. i know that they are all different frequencys and the 30 is in a range where it may be picking up a piece of trash next to the nickel. in no way an i saying the 30 doesn't pick up nickels - its a nice detector.
