I sold my Mx5 to a good friend last fall and he immediately started making good finds with it. Since then, I have tried several other detectors, but was always comparing them to the MX5. For the record, I had a SEF 10x12 coil on my old MX5 and had that same coil on a V3i and DFX with exceptional results. This coil seems to "mesh" perfectly on most Whites's detectors. I got a used MX5 about 10 days ago and it had the stock 9 inch coil on it. I used this coil twice for about 5 hours total and it performed very well, but not like the SEF 10x12. I got another 10x12 yesterday and since the rain finally stopped, I used it today at a local fairgrounds. I have not found any silver coins here in a year or so, but can usually find a couple of deep wheat pennies if I slow down and listen carefully. The yearly fair ended two weeks ago and I was not listening as intently as I should because of the surface coins and trash. When I got to an area where most of my older coins have come from, I did slow down and start listening for deeper sounding targets. I got a familiar sounding signal that was high toning from one direction, with a high 80'-90 number and when checked from a ninety degree angle, it would not give an audible signal, but the threshold broke and a quick 90 number flashed. I got a "tight" coin like pinpoint and dug to about 9 inches to find a pristine mercury dime. Again, considering where I was detecting and how deep this coin was, makes me believe this detector is Whites "best kept secret" Settings coin with first three iron segments notched out, sens 8, threshold 18, eight tones. Randy, I followed your advice and looked for clean ground in all metal and then pumped the coil to start the ground tracking. Worked perfectly!
