Second Machine

Hello,

I have posted this on other forums and so far had not gotten many replies. Would like some help.

I currently own an Excalibur 1000. Have used it for a year now and love it. I feel I am finally starting to understand what it is saying to me.

Recently I had to send it to the shop. Of course this happened over the 4 of July weekend. Here in San Diego, we only had 1.5 million at the beaches so I did not miss much. And there was only a -1.3 tide with it. NO big deal.

Well, after doing some crying, I decided it was time to get a second machine. My wife acutally agreed because she had never seem me so antsy around the house.

My question is, what would be a good second machine as a backup for the Excalibur? I do mainly beach hunting, mostly wet sand, and a little shallow surf.

I was looking at the Elite. It seems it has the same electronics as the Excalibur so I am guessing, tones would be about the same. So would performance. I know it is not submersable but I do not need it to be. I was also looking at the GT but was not sure if there would be a big learning curve over the Elite.

Any input would be welcome.

Thanks.

The Elite and GT should respond the same as the excal. Tones the same and response nearly the same.
You shouldn't have to relearn either one of them.

I hunted the beach for the last two summers with the Elite and decided that I wanted the waterproof version so I got rid of the Elite and got an Excal 1000. You are correct that there will be no learning curve. The tones are a little better on the Elite in my opinion but it's mostly the quality of the tones as the pitch is very close. In my opinion, the Tornado 1000 coil is superior to the BBS 1000 coil. It's lighter and maybe a tad more sensitive. Not that I don't love the Excal, I do. But I loved the Elite as well and you will too. I think from what I have heard though that doing it now I would go for the GT because it sounds to be a new and improved Elite. I haven't used one but it seems to have all the right features.

I also found the Quattro to be an outstanding beach machine and probably the deepest machine I've ever seen at the beach. Quite a bit deeper that the Excal or the Elite. But also nothing like either one of them.

I was in the Exact same situation as you two summers ago when I had to send my CZ-70 (primary beach machine at the time) in for repair just prior to the 4th weekend. And I considered getting another CZ-70, because it's such a kick-butt machine. But I decided I wanted to "take a walk on the wild side" and try some of that "17 frequency BBS stuff" so I got the Elite. It was a very good move and it quickly replaced the CZ (which I still have and will never get rid of) as my primary beach machine. It's a real pleasure to hunt with and very well-balanced with the box mounted in the rear under the cup. Practically swings itself...something you can't say about the Excal.

Dan, thanks for the input. It is good to know they are close.

Mike, I was looking at the GT but not sure I could talk my wife into the extra $100. I still have not found her that diamond ring she must have to bribe her with. I have created a hip mount for my Excalibur so it is a lot easier to swing. I do want to get a coil lock as that is my biggest problem working the surf.

I hear ya, man. It was in September I think that I found the diamond ring that bribed MY wife into agreeing it was a good idea for me to get an Excal for Christmas last year. :D

JW, I have been looking at the GT and it seems like a great machine. I am hoping that I can find that diamond ring this weekend, the one that will make my wife say, "sure, get the better machine" as she is blinded by the BLING. Actually, if I found two it would be great, one for her and one to sell to get the second machine. I am also looking at the meter that people have been recommending for about $280. And of course there is the custom shaft, I will need a new case, a new scoop would not be bad, Hmmmmm, this is getting out of hand.

LOL...I know the feeling of getting out of hand...it never seems to end. If it will help, I found a nice womans gold band (no Diamonds) maybe size of your wifes finger...I could send it to you and you could say you found it and she might just let you spend the dough for a better diamond finder...LOL...what size is her finger?

:D Thanks for the offer but it is not the size of the finger, it is the size of the diamonds. The ring can always be resized. Just ask any lady.

you won't be disappointed!!!! If you are mainly using it for the beach you really have no need for a meter since if you don't dig everything other than the iron you will be leaving a lot of bling behind :) I had an Elite for a year as a backup to my Explorer. Now I have a GT as a backup to my Explorer but the GT is quickly becoming my main machine. The GT is pretty much the equal of the Explorer on the Beach. More sensitive to gold than the Elite and better depth. As I said for performance there is almost no difference between the GT and the Explorer so I feel confident that I am not missing anything no matter which one I grab when I am heading out. I never had that confidence in the Elite. The Elite is a good machine but the GT is definitely better!!!! JMHO

Will keep that in mind. I think I will go for the GT when money allows. GOt my Excalibur back last night and went out at 3 AM to catch low tide. Bad news, detector still acting up. Good news, I was still able to pull out 3 rings, two gold and a ?. Look for my post later with pictures. The ? ring is marked only with an L. Seems heavier than silver but not

hey Scoutingbear, This is just something for you to evaluate! You might want to consider a FISHER CZ-70Pro for a second machine. This detector is SPLASHPROOF, and if you buy it new, it will have a LIFETIME WARRANTY. It is a two frequency machine, so that it will WORK JUST FINE on any saltwater beach!! With the splashproof factor, you won't have to EXERCISE THE CAUTION, that you will shallow waterhunting with the Sovereign GT. But, it does not have a built-in IRON MASK, and you SHOULD MANUALLY GROUND BALANCE the CZ-70Pro for MAXIMUM DEPTH/and smoother operation. Best of all, they are EXTREMELY WELL BUILT, and you can hipmount them to eliminate the weight factor. I have (3) EXCALIBURS at the moment, and I really love them, but they do brake down alot. I own a CZ-70Pro/EXCEL ID, which I use strictly for landhunting. You can pick up a USED CZ-70Pro for approx. $600, maybe with a blank warranty card, but the warranty is not transferrable. Also, I have never owned a SOVEREIGN of any kind, so take that into account also! Best of luck, whatever you decide. HH
