Second coil

I'm wanting a smaller coil for my ETrac and can't decide between 8" or 5" Sunray or the Coiltek 6" Treasureseeker coil. I have the Coiltek 6" digger for my XTerra and love it and kinda of thinking it would cover a little more ground than the 5" and have more separation than a 8" coil.

New to the ET and only have 50hrs on it but I have the 6" EQ and really like it so far. Hit a textbook flat Merc right at 7" and it went off loud and clear with lots of disc....no doubt it would have also hit it at 8" imo....

I bought the Sunray X5 a week after I got my Etrac. I really can't compare it to the other small coils because I've not used them. But I can tell you with out a doubt....the X5 is awesome in heavy trash!!!! I use it all the time because I hunt many old home sites that are thick with all kinds of small "you name it" junk targets. I HAVE many times easily picked coins and even jewelry out from amongst all the trash with the X5. Just have to work it slow......but it does it's job........TR

I use small coils on 90% of my hunts - have approx. 2000 hrs. on my machine - the 6" and 4.5" x 7" EQ coils are fantastic.
I've never used one but I've heard nothing but the best about the 5.5" SunRay coils.

Any one of these three coils are considered to be the best at separation in heavy iron - hunting in overgrown areas and for getting in tight spots.
These coils hit deep for their size - I've found a lot of 7" to 8" dimes with my Excellerator coils - light weight too so you can swing them all day long.

Good Luck !

thanks Guys ... I know the 6" digger on my XTerra works great and I hunt a lot of trash too and knew I needed a smaller coil

has anyone tried the 8x6" SEF coil ?

I use the 8x6 SEF on trashy yards and similar places. I start with the next size up SEF and if its messy then I step down to the 8x6. I have nothing in the negative to say about it other than It would be nice if it could also pick up the coins and put them in my pouch. I get clean solid readings and don't often guess what the coin will be with it. On the Explorer forum Bryce did a great job of doing some sampling with different coils, you should take some time to read it.

thanks for the tip ... I like the basic idea of it a little more coverage but still has great separation. might just be the coil I'm looking for

I like more than only a second coil, because it seems like each and everyone brings its own special abilities to the table. I have and really like all the Sun Ray's X5,X8 and X12 along with the SEF's 6x8, 10x12 and 12x15 which are all great coils that IMO have crisper solid sound with great separation. I guess I really like experimenting with each, as it's like having a new machine each time for every situation. ( FUN)

I have the X5 and X8 and will say the X8 is my all time favorite on the Etrac. It very stable, good target seperation and still gives a fair amount of coverage. It pretty much stays on my Etrac unless the X5 is begging to take a ride! The new 6" from Coilteck is supposed to be awesome also! :detecting:

well my machine will be here tomorrow and going for a hunt with my dealer to get me started. Leaning real hard towards the 8x6 SEF as my go to coil

I have both the Sun Ray X8 and the 8x6 SEF...both are great coils that do the job well but the SEF gets the nod for being narrower which is great for the overgrown brush areas. It stays on the Etrac, but i keep the X8 in the bag...never hurts to take a spare.

I ordered the 8x6 SEF ... Thanks everyone

I love my 8x6 SEF. I use the ProCoil 95% of the time unless I get into real heavy iron. The 8x6 is a great combo with TTF. I also use it in super high trash areas. I picked up a 15" WOT which is great but heavy. Picked up 2 large cents in a bean field my first 2 hunts with it.

After reading about how well the X5 does in trashy sites, which i hunt on a lot, i have traded another member the X8 for his X5 (thanks, Virgile). Can't wait to try it out. The SEF 8x6 is the choice for mid size coil.

I got the 8x6 yesterday and swung it in my frozen yard and got a 1-40 hit 10" deep :jump:

Hopefully once the ground thaws and you can dig it it's something good. I've dug a lot of deeeep silver dimes that ring up solid 1-40's (especially Barber dimes for some reason).

I thought that should be a silver dollar

You never know! When you do dig it, post the results.

if it's big silver you know I will ... lol
