Sebastian Inlet trip, no gold, but some History.

My trip to Sebastian Inlet was great. I got out to hunt a couple times. Didn't find any gold or silver, but had a good time trying. Was limited to wet sand do to Private salvage rights in the water. The lagoon was off limits also , saw one man in lagoon with MD but was asked to leave by a park ranger soon after arriving. Went by the treasure Museum just south of the Inlet where all the 1715 Spanish fleet sank. Small Museum but very informative and some real nice loot. They had a book full of pictures of people who had found treasure just lying on the beach in the past few years. Here are some pics. of my spins.

Looks like a great place to visit. and detect. But I have a couple of questions on Metal Detecting in the State Park.
Did park authorities tell you that the reason you could not detect in the water was because of leased salvage rights?
Why was the MDER kicked out of the lagoon?

I went to the Parks website. They list every activity associated with water sports and recreation but make no mention of Metal Detecting as permitted or restricted.

I asked these questions because there is an effort being made by Florida State Artifact hunters to restore their rights to recovering isolated finds. State regulations currently ban these activities in State Park Waters.. This ban also effects us as metal detectorist. The Artifact hunters have in a direct way been fighting our fight for us. I believe the reason water access is restricted at Sebastian is because of the Isolated Finds Regulations and not due to Salvage leases. They make no mention of Salvage leases in their WebSite... Lived in Cocoa Bch. four years in the 70's. Done lots of fishing from the jetties, so much has change. Thanks for the pictures and the travel back in time.

The water is leased to the Mel Fisher group from what I have read. I did not know anyone could actually lease ocean waters! Anyways, you cannot detect in the water only on the beach up to the start of the dune area and down to the start of the water line. I sent you a PM.
