Search Rod Clamp issue - ? ? ?

UtahRich

After a hiatus of a few months, I took the E-trac out for a hunt Friday after work and found a problem with the clamping mechanism on the upper rod. It isn't tightening enough to get any pressure on the lower rod allowing it to Yo-Yo up and down. Can't say I've ever had any problems with the search rod on any Explorer/E-trac before. Nothing 'looks' damaged or broken. The Red plastic insert that applies pressure to the lower rod when the cam mechanism is lowered doesn't get to the point when it tightens enough to hold it in place. I made a temp fix by placing a couple strips of heavy duty boxing tape in the bore of the upper shaft to reduce the inside diameter. Any ideas of what happened?

yes, those cam lock pressure plates (red plates) wear out occasionally. Just need to pull them out and replace them with new ones. I have actually been trying to get these from minelab for a few months already without any luck. I am guessing but you just may have to fix the problem yourself or send it in, from what I understand they wont sell those kind of parts directly anymore. Speaks for the service doesnt it? There is actually a vid on MLOTV.com that shows how to replace these.

Thanks for the update. Doesn't look like it would be that difficult to replace IF I can get the part. Greatly appreciated.

Sure anytime and it is real simple to replace. Keep in mind the the one by the display and the one on the middle shaft are different.

Just the one at the bottom of the upper shaft that holds the lower shaft in place.

thanks again.

I think its not red -rubber- problem , check more carefully, maybe pin is of from the lock or upper shaft not fully in or putted upside down, I mean 45angle cut? or metal plate between red rubber and lock is lost? but dont know how its can happen. My suggestion take pin off from the lock and inspect red rubber.

I will recheck. The upper connection between the housing and the search rod is excellent, no problems there. Trouble is the clamp mechanism between the upper and lower search rods. Perhaps a good picture will help. I'll see what I can come up with tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks,

Do like I did and call your dealer. Mine called MINELAB and had the parts in two days. Want hurt to ask.
