Most of us who have a reasonable amount of success use a grid pattern when searching ground. If you are like me I concentrate on my Detector and when i look back it seems I walk like a "Drunk sailor." I just got a Boating Marker Buoy to mark my path. Seems like it is going to work pretty well. It has a big orange float that holds the string and a small lead weight that is not blown away.

Also it would be nice if you would put your favorite detector in your signature so the rest of us will know what you hunt with.

Whatever works for you will also help keep you in the "detecting mode" mentally:thumbup: I have done some gridding in the past and for the most part I had to go by sight usually because of obstacles (mainly trees and shrubs) while hoping a target rich area would be found for a more thorough search:detecting: HH & HH!

At the shore i usually do the drunkin sailor pattern too till i find the hot spot..if i wish to grid dry sand or even the sandy lake bottom i just drag my scoop behind me as i detect.. leaves tell tale strip everywhere ive been...

Yeah that will work for a tight grid but it will also attract a lot attention in a public park or other public areas. Might be ok for a private but i personally wouldn't do something like that in a public park. These days as more and more public parks are becoming off limits to detecting, the stealthier the better IMO.

I do the drunken sailor routine and call it a day. Besides, i can always return and find areas i missed while i was previously stumbling off course.

I like the grid method if I have a certain area marked off in my mind. I usually just mentally mark off my grid. I may pick certain landmarks to use as a reference points. If it is a large area that I'm hunting, I may randomly hit spots that catch my attention. But I definitely understand that drunken sailor path. Been there, done that many times...
