hi i went detecting on Sunday to a site that roman and hammered coins have been found ,but had no luck as usual ,as i came off the fields i saw someone using a explorer sx he was digging deep holes. as there seemed to be a lot of one way signals, which i tend to ignore. But as i did not get many good signals i dug a couple of these one way signals and they were deep but just iron bits so i spoke to the chap asking if he was digging one way signals he said as there was a lot of iron stone around you should dig all signals as he had found roman and hammered by doinng this as anyone else found this to be the case ?

Deeper coin targets have a tendency to drift towards iron signals when they start to get out of the detector's range. It's somewhat of a default with every metal detector that I've ever used. Now, if by one way signals, you mean that you only get a decent signal going say, just right OR just left, they will tend to be just that - iron, most of the time. Here's the rub: any iron near a good target is going to mask that target from at least one direction. I'm a sucker for iffy signals and have never backed away from one without thoroughly investigating from every direction possible. Now this may take more time but I have learned my Explorer's "language" very well because of this. Consequently, given time, you will develop a feel for those little chirps. Hope this helps.
