Hi , i'm new hear , just got an se this spring , i started with factory setting , have done ok, the manual says keep the coil just off the ground , others say scub the ground, i'v read the post on scrubbing here and it seems the manual may be wrong ( am i right or wrong) I've tried all metal and manual sens . at 20 , so many signals , i was lost , it seemed the cursor on smart find would stay in the top left cornor unless i hit a target of any kind and then it would move , alot of chirping sounds , is that just the false signals or the high iron signals? When i hit a silver , copper or a good target of any kind will the pitch be high and the cursor at the top right side? May be dumb questions , but i sure could use some help>.. thanks in advance

If you are in advanced and you use smart screen...your sens. is set at 20...and you are over a pile of nails...and close together targets of iron...the only way you will see curser change is to go sloooowwwww and let threshhold come back...curser will not change until threshold refreshes from next target...if you select ferrous sounds then iron will be lowwwwwwwwww tone...if you select conductive sounds then iron will be high sound like penny, dime, quarter, silver...that is why many like ferrous sounds to not get confused with iron and coins...or ferrous and non ferrous...you need to air test at home different coins and whatever..to get to know audio sounds of diff. targets...make sure you have tones set to atleast 8...to very targets enough to make a decision as what to listen for. If you are in an area with tons of targets too close then use a smaller coil and or lower sens to be able to not over whelm the coil...this machine if turned up high in sens. will pick up from a distance...like your steel toe boots or shovel or close fences or cars...etc....I mainly use 18 sens. and if ok will turn up to 22 or 24. but really don't need to crank it up and most likely loose depth. Any questions just ask....I may have missed alot...but I know the explorer well enough to help any newbie.....

Thanks Matt, what about scrubing the coil to the ground or a little off the groung? the book says a little off the ground and i hear a lot of the guys say scrub the ground ? thanks for your time

I have always swung coil just a bit above the ground and only scrub the ground when I get an iffy...just to see if I can get a better audio and to see a better accurate depth of target..I also in the woods with leaves and pine needles hear a scratchy iffy...I will clear the ground of them and scrub...it increases audio alot....but I am not gonna drag my coil to the ground cause it is alot more work on the shoulder...if target is within iffy depth then an inch or so off the ground is ok..its not feasable in the woods when tree limbs and etc....are in the way...I find coil does give false blips when scrubbing...if it ain't then your sens. is set too low..there is a fine line between too high and too low and just right....get rid of the falsing but not completely...a little falsing is good but don;t over do it to where you will not get deepies....the slower you go the better....but too slow can mess you up also....so experiment and you will be fine..take mental notes everytime you go out.

i personally don't like the idea of scrubbing the ground especially on farmland soil -you wont do the coil much good. I keep my coil half an inch to 1 inch above the surface lightly skimming just LITTLE above terra firma . I have tried all methods with the se and find that half an inch to 1 inch above the ground works ok. No matter weather you scrub or skim or hold the coil 2 inches above the ground i honestly can't say i have noticed any difference with the iron falsing we keep hearing about on this forum. I am currently testing the SE on some really extremely iron infested (coke too) fields trying to get a grip with it all. It's not easy but eventually when i feel i have learn't something "concrete" from working highly iron infestsed site's i will post some of my findings.

Does anyone use the menue and use the accept or reject option for coins , ferrous coins jewlery and so on ?
