SE Pro question

Hi again
Have been out in this cold weather trying to learn my machine.
I'm running bryces settings. I have found a few wheats a lot of memorials and a child's silver ring.
Here is my question
When I test open air at home I can not tell an audible difference between a wheatje and a silver dime or any silver other than a Morgan. Is my detector broke? I definitely show a different curser position though.

There is not much of a difference, i can tell a slight difference in tone on a silver dime vs. a copper penny. SLight, and if its got much depth to it then they can sound very similar. The dime i dug the other day that was pretty much on the surface was a very strong signal and i new it wasnt going to be a wheat when i dug it because of the cursor position which you should never rely on but being close to the surface it was very accurate. Your detector isnt broke

Als, indianaman, make sure your "limits" and "variability" settings are maxed out at 10. These two settings affect how your tones sound, and how many tones your machine uses to assign to the different target IDs. If your variability is set below maximum, then you are not using the maximum number of tones, meaning that more and more targets will get lumped into a specific tone...

you have some more time on the SE and have familiarized yourself with it.

Variability is the key because the higher the setting...the bigger the difference is between the pitch between a wheatie and a silver dime.
The highest setting of 10 allows the silver coins to sound higher than wheaties.

If you are running my settings then you have your variability maxed at 10... and with practice experimenting over actual in ground targets before digging...you will begin to hear a higher pitched "warble" or higher pitched "tinkling bell sound" when the target is silver instead of a wheatie.

There is simply put...a slightly higher pitched sound when your coil runs over silver than when it runs over wheaties the biggest majority of the time UNLESS your variability isn't maxed to 10.

If it happens to be set at 8...then wheaties and silver sound identical to me.

Thanks everyone. Triple checked it is at 10. Re air checked with headphones on this time, and there is a slight higher tone from silver. Going to a different older park today. Gonna try a 7 second sweep. Low and slow. I hope to hear the sweet silver bell tingle!

One more thing, indianaman -- you might put a silver dime on the ground, and a wheatie about a foot away from it, and with your headphones on, swing back and forth across the two targets. You should hear a slight difference...

Thanks again for the tips.
Update from yesterday.
Went to the park. This is the same place I found a merc with the xs long ago. Worked a 20 x 20 area. Man was it full of old nails. Some were square they were thick! Found a wheatie and 5 clad. Bout 4 to 5 inches deep.
Dang near every plug had nails in it! So I was finding coins thru heavy iron. So I think I am doing it right. Now if some silver will find its way under my coil it will be mine!

I am officially readdicted! Now where ever I drive I see a good spot. Have 3 that when weather breaks I will be knocking on some doors! I have a lead on on old train station too! Fingers crossed!

Amen to that!

Exactly what i was going to say..... headphones are a big factor as is coil size and it sounds like near targets as well which will alter a tone.
