SE Pro coil on XS; cord too short!!???

Chris(SoCenWI)

Well-known member
Anybody out there using the new Pro coil on an original explorer XS? I know they have changed the design of the rods on the newer models. I've got the coil part of the cord right at the very top of the lower rod and when I push the cord in the slot it is an inch or two too short to feed out the right place at the bottom of the rod.

Are they all this short or did I get a boo boo?

Chris

Chris, my SE Pro coil should be here tomorrow and if no one else comments I will on how mine is. can you tie a piece of wax string on connector of the coil cable and pull it up and thru? That is what had to be done on my upper shaft I got with my Probe many years ago.

I was just going to hook my new coil up to the probe so length for that would not be an issue, but I will check it with the standard upper and lower original shafts...

Wow that sucks. I have an XS and use the new coil, but I also use the Newer lower black rod. It does seem shorter but in my case it is better and slides right in lower rod, unlike all other coil wires I have to simulate fly fishing to get coil wire down lower shaft hole. It is a tighter wound coiled cable end. I will go and try to use original lower rod and see what happens....BRB.....:smoke:

I just tried it on my older lower rod and yes the cable is too short to use on that rod.

I see 2 options...and one is not sell the coil.....:punch:

1) Find hieght you need to get cable in groove and mark it with a pencil.(Not sure how tall you are) and cut lower rod down to that mark with a fine hack saw blade, deburr and wahlah!...or

2) Buy a new lower Black fiberglass rod made for the Explorer II or SE and it works fine.

Just don't sell the coil! ;)

OK< I now understand what Chris was saying, not good news since I really did not want to use my composite rod since my SunRay Probe requires the original lower rod, unless I do some modifications. OK, I will post tomorrow if mine is also short, which I assume now it will be. Depending how short, I think cutting off some of the lower rod is a good fix. I hope. :)

your sunray probe requires the original lower rod? I use both newer black Expl.II lower rod and also older lower rod, with or without my Sunray probe. If you have the probe on either lower rod will work and if you don't have probe on and use the new SE pro coil, only the newer lower rod will work, unless of course you want to modify older lower rod.....The only time I never use the probe is when I go to the beach, due to salt and sand not good on probe switch, cause the Boot is ripped around it. So having both new and old lower rod has its advantage....

I do not use the composite lower rod now with my Sunray probe, the cable runs inside and I do not want to wrap it around on the outside of the lower shaft to make it work unless I had to. I have always considered one big plus for the Explorer being the fact that the coil cable on the lower shaft was not exposed to the elements as much as the other detectors that just wrap about the shaft
I hunt in wooded areas that are heavy with green briar patches. I prefer not to to expose my cable more than I have to. I have had a couple coil cables damaged by thorns stuck into the cable, even with the recessed channel on the lower original rod. The puncture marks, both known and unknown cause problems later on, especially when hunting in damp/wet conditions. Also I would not want to wrap the new SE Pro cable around either lower shaft, unless I absolutely would have to do so.

I am sure my coil will arrive tomorrow and I hope to install and try it out in the afternoon, not sure yet if I will go with the Probe setup or stock setup for my initial hunts.

I liked the problem and the way you guys resolved it. This is a good example of an interesting topic and quick fix, no crap.:clapping:

I just set the coiled part on the top of the lower rod and did not tuck the cord into the slot all the way to the bottom. Used it for a couple of hours this afternoon. I didn't want to cut the lower rod down because I detect with it almost fully extended.

Gut feeling so far is that it behaves much the same as the stock, but definitely lighter. Didn't notice much difference serpation or noise immunity-wise thus far. I will bring it to one of the sites I've pounded with all my other coils and see what it does.

I am not sure if you got a boo boo or not. The Tall Man Shaft is the Carbon Fiber Shaft which is about 4" Longer than the usual Carbon Fiber Shaft. I wrapped mine around the Shaft and I did notice that I did have to stretch out the Cord a bit to get it connected to the X-1 Probe. I think the Cord maybe too short on that Coil you got. You should be able to stretch it enough to connect it to the X-1 Probe like I did and then push it into the Lower Rod if you are using the Old XS Lower Rod and then be able to put the Cap back onto the bottom of the Shaft. Hope the Coil doesn't have to be sent back due to a short Cord. It's an Amazing Coil and I am sure once you use it and get a few hours in on it, that you will see what I am seeing with it. At first, I didn't think it was that great but now, I have seen what it can do in Dry Ground. Hope you see it too when you get out with it. Good Luck and HH and hope you find a fix to it.

From what I see this will only be a problem for the XS users if they do not use a Sun Ray in line probe and the original lower shaft with the grove cut in for the coil wire. If you use a X-1 probe the coil wire is not in the upper part of the shaft anyway, but if you don't use a X-1 then this can be a problem with original lower shaft. If you have the carbon fibre shaft which is the replacement to the older XS shaft which are no longer being made I can't see any problems with or without the X-1 probe. My understanding is the coiled part of the cable is closer to the coil so it will want to sit in the slot on the older XS Shaft, but cant if not using a X-1 probe. For the people that have the older lower XS rods and want to use the new Pro coil and don't use a X-1 will have to get a new lower carbon fibre shaft which is the replacement now anyway and will fit all the upper shafts Minelab has made for the Explorers.

UPS just delivered mine now, wow, it is a shorter cord, usually on other brands there is too much cord. LOL OK, I installed it on the new shaft and decided to keep the upper shaft with the S-1 probe on it for my first test. I had to wrap the cord around the lower rod, but do not feel real bad about doing so, since the first loop around the coil does not start to about 8 inches above the coil (forward facing that is) and today I am not testing it in greenbriar. :)
Out the door I go now for my first sort of quick hunt with it, I do feel the difference already in the weight! Thumbs Up!!
