SE Display contrast & brightness

New member
Does anybody know if sending an SE back to Minelab for a poor display has ever helped with the problem? Can Minelab do anything to increase the contrast and brightness of the display? I think I already know the answer, but thought I would ask anyway. It is a great deep silver getter and I can live with the other problems, but the display is almost impossible to see with my poor eyes. Maybe I would have a better chance of getting my eyes repaired than I would getting Minelab to improve the Explorer display. Thanks!

I think your last sentence is true. Lasik or whatever IS available; Minelab working toward making their machines more "user-friendly" seems NOT to be an option...hopefully that changes going forward.

I do adjust my contrast at times, in different light conditions. It does help some...

If I get very far from the mid-point setting either direction, then I really can't see much at all. I think if I can find someone with an SE I might be able to compare mine to his. There could be something wrong with my display. At any rate I will have to live with it or give up the SE. Don't want to do that though. Thanks,

Yeah, I keep mine about the mid point, too -- but last night while hunting with the backlight on, I had to turn it up -- I put it at about 7. I could see the screen alot better, in the dark with the backlight on, at 7. Which gets me to thinking...I wonder if you could try the backlight during the day, and then adjust your contrast accordingly? It might help some. While you wouldn't, obviously, SEE the backlight, it might change the way the screen looks just enough, and you might be able to adjust the contrast a little differently, and get it to show up a bit better for you. It would use up your batteries quicker running with a backlight on, but it just might help.

But yes, comparing yours with someone else's would be good, too -- just to make sure you DON'T have a display problem.

Steve, I hadn't thought about that, e.g. using the backlight during the day. I hope I can remember to try that the next time out. Sure it will use up battery life but I always carry an extra rechargeable set anyway so that may just be an answer - it's worth a try anyway.

I'm going to try it myself, Daug...may do no good at all, but I have noticed before when hunting at night that I have to change my contrast, from my "normal" setting, when the backlight is on...so there may be some benefit to trying that during the day...guess we shall see. First one to try it, can report back and let everyone know if it is a useless idea, or if it helps a little.

I believe I have tried that, but can't remember whether I have or not. Thanks Guys for being so slow responding. Went to bead earlly last night, triying to get a woodworking shop built and it's wearing me out. Anyway, I really like the SE! HH!

I have read that some people have used a non glare piece used on I-phones have worked well. I myself have not used one. Auto tinted window pieces help. If there is a business close by they will probably give you a few scrap pieces to try. HH :minelab:

I might look into that idea too. Never thought of anything like that, I'll try anything that could help! Thanks!

Ive seen a couple of those anti glare screens mentioned but i think NuShield was one some people liked. Down here in the sun i run mine at 2. You should be able to tell if its working properly.... goes very dark to very light on mine. Sorry guys.... but that back light will do nothing but drain your battery in the day light, especially if you forget to turn it off. Now in darker areas you may be ok to use it.

I will definitley look at the NuShield screen protector. Ran a search and liked what I saw. Will look at WW to see if they have it or something similar. Thanks Dew!

Thought of another option.... have you tried FULL SCREEN? Ive only used it a couple of times, but it enlarges the center portion of the screen making it easier to see.

I have tried that and it helps. I run the full size digital screen, because I can see the large numbers easier than I can see the Cross hair on the Smartfind screen. I realize most users prefer Smartfind, but I do what works best for me. I have Fuch's Dystrophy, and please don't laugh, it actually is a problem where the Corneas in your eyes are deteriorating and your eyesight just gradually worsens, until you have trouble seeing anymore. It looks like I was trying to spell a different word there, but I actually have this problem. I want to keep my SE, but need a little help. I appreciate everybody's imput!

Wish they would use a red back light much better for night hunting. Good luck ... hope it all helps.
