SE Coil Issues

DFXer

New member
I'm new to the SE this year and have experienced too much of what I call "touch falsing" particularly in the woods around cellar holes. From what I'm reading on this forum I'm not alone.

Has anyone defined in technical terms what causes the falsing - static discharge, grounding issues, capacitance between coil and ground or something else?

Has anyone tried to ground the "guts" of the SE to see if that helps? I'd like to go out and run some experiments but the ground is frozen.

Paul,
I had the se and went back to the EX2. But I know there are issues with that coil. Maybe not all of them but I truly believe it may be a shielding problem. I would start by turning the sensitivity down to around 18 and work from there. I guess I should of asked what settings you are using. After you make all of your adjustments make sure you noise cancel. When I had my SE I switched to the sunray 8 inch and didn't experience the falsing that I had with the stock 10. I hate to tell you to get another coil but I think your issue is probably in the coil. Just try some lower settings and if you have deep turned on try turning it off and see if that helps any. Hopefully you just have a "hot" machine and just running some lower settings will take care of the problems.

You also may want to check the post by Charles(upstate ny) under the post a bit disappointed in Minelab. This is also what I mentioned in my above post.

I agree with you AND OTHERS say that their are serious issues with the new SE coil , i have had 3 SE coils and all falsed very annoyingly so my guess is that this is some kind of in built design problem and not just "faulty coils" as some believe. On the plus side a lot of extra sensitivity can be got out of these SE coils ideal for ring hunting and small hammered coin hunting. The falsing problem is something that needs urgent attention as a detector costing ? 1000 ? or $1500 $ or whatever really does suck like the guy said especially when it works bad. My SE went ages ago i sold it cos it would not work in the wet especially and nulled out like hell over farmland , i hated the SE on iron sites / farmland it really did not perform like i wanted it to.. Any way sorry for moaning , i am waiting for the next gen explorer to arrive i will try one and hopefully it will work better than the SE. i think the explorers are all great detectors but the SE coil is (in my opinion) honestly totally crap. The older ex 2 and XS coils were my favourite! Like i said though the extra sensitivity can be really useful on certain sites but the falsing is a real bug bear.

When you start trying to cut down the amount of materials that these coils are made of to get what is called a slimline coil to address the weight factor you lose the ability to shield the coil well. It is somewhat difficult to get enough shielding in these thin coils. Also with the outer covering being thinner doesn't help either. That is why the SunRay X-8 and X-5 work very well. The Exp.II coil is very well built too and I'm sure works great. I personally have had no problem with a lot of falsing in wet conditions or brushy area with the SE stock coil. Just my thoughts about the subject. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

John,
What are you shielding the coil from - electrostatic discharge? Since the coil has to touch something before it falses doesn't it suggest that there is a potential difference between the coil and the ground? If that is true then wouldn't grounding somehow help?

I guess I'm trying to understand and solve a problem someone else should have before I gave them $1200.

This is interesting because you can improperly adjust a DFX to act similarly to an SE but you have to set the dynamic range of the adjustments way out there.

You can't solve a problem until you understand it!
You can't understand it until you measure it!

Thanks for the reply,
Paul
