SE acting up or is it me.

I have had my se for 2 years. Started the year off detecting in Texas and KY and was doing excellent. Machine was working well and the finds were outstanding. I started detecting in WI and my machine is going crazy. I lower the sensitivity, lower the IM, switch from deep on to off, fast on to off and all I get are noise and more noise. If I get any signal worth digging, there is nothing in the hole. After an hour of not finding a thing (while a buddy who is detecting next to me is finding stuff all over), I get a penny reading at about 4 inches, dig the plug and out comes one of those big old time horse bells. That never should have registered around a penny. I gave up at set the machine on factory preset. Over the next hour I found 2 wheats, about a dollar in various clad and a silver medallion (9-10 inches deep). The machine seemed to be working in factory preset but not in the settings that I usually use. Do I need to send it it or what. PJ

PJ...I would guess it has something to do with the WI soil. What....I don't know. If it works okay in the factory presets...I would assume that's because those are basic settings that usually work well in the vast majority of soil conditions...which is exactly what it's supposed to do.
It sounds like you have pretty much tried many various settings and combinations of those settings....so maybe you should consider sending it in.

There are a ton of very experienced users here though...and maybe someone can get into some more technical info for you.

Since you went back to factory setting and you are getting the same results, if you have a probe attached disconnect it. Then try it again. If you are still getting the same, then change coils. Just eliminate all other possibilities.

Are you hunting with sensitivity in manual or semi? Certain places I hunt here in PA. drive the SE crazy. Have you noise canceled? . I would also remove coil cover and clean all the crud & moisture out. Hope it works out for you. HH

PJ,

I'm guessing you have a bad coil connection. There is a thread down a bit that addresses this. The only reason that it would work in factory preset and not your normal settings is if you have the sensitivity cranked to high.

Chris

I agree with chris... you may be asking the detector to do too much in the conditions you are working. If you have a smaller coil try it with your settings. Ive also found, much like a computer, it needs to be rebooted occassionally. Sometimes my slimpack acts up after it gets below half discharged and i get an awful racket that i cant noise cancel... but can turn it on and off which fixes it for a short time. Im using AA's and rechargeables now. Im not having ANY problems.

Hey Bryce. I must have missed something about you becoming a moderator. Congratulation. You deserve it. I took my machine to work and during my 30 minute lunch hour I reprogrammed my detector using most of your settings, turned down the sensitivity a little, cleaned under the coil, and tightened all connections. It worked perfect. Stopped after work for an hour hunt and it continued to work fantastic. 7 wheats and a rosary with 18 little medals attached to it. Some of them are really cool. Thanks for the reply. PJ

Magicman. I tightened everything up today and cleaned under the coil. Took it out for 2 short hunts today and it is working fine again. Thanks for the info. PJ

Shadowman. Thanks for the help. I cleaned under the coil and tightened everything up. Took for 2 short hunts today and everything is good again. PJ

Hey Chris. Thanks for the reply. I tightened everything and turned down the sensitivity and went on 2 short hunts. It's working fine again. Still waiting to get together. I was introduced to a place yesterday that you would love to detect at. I will ask the guy who found it if he wouldn't mind a "pro" helping us out. PJ

Hey dewcon. Thanks for the info. I reprogrammed my detector and tightened everything up and it is working fine again. PJ

Thanks for the congrats PJ.
Glad to hear your machine seems to be back to normal...and made some nice finds for you:thumbup:

Did you have any high power lines or overhead power lines in the area? I know the XLT used to act up if I was under power lines....
