Scuba Tector finds on Schroon Lake, NY

Great Job! Looks like I see some old treasure in there?

The only old coin is the wheatie just to the right of the dog tag. The coin on the top left is a $1 coin. I would have expected to find much more, but this beach has seen other detectorists I was told. I snorkeled while using the Scuba Tector and the water was COLD :)

You are right in that the beach had been hunted before . . . . I used to live on Brant Lake just a short distance from Schroon Lake and actually went to summer camp there. We used to hunt the beaches on many of the local lakes in the early 70's and were wading / diving in the water by 1975. It was amazing the amount that came off the beaches at that time . . . coins, jewelry and other cool items.

One thing that people sometimes discount is that the equipment that was out in the mid-to-late 1970's had ground balance and discrimination. Not quite what we have today but we were able to get some pretty deep targets with those early VLF units. As far as water hunting, we started by floating control boxes and jury-rigged extension cables with sand / epoxy weights on the coils. Most of what we used was one-off and home-made but it worked (at least until the float flipped or the connections leaked as I can attest to from personal experience)

Lake George was another amazing area to hunt and when we dove the area around the town pier, 20+ silver coins and several gold rings were not unusual from a single dive.

Hate to use that expression as it does make me feel old but . . . :

Andy

That is great Andy, thanks for sharing. I was surprised when I arrived at the swim beach for my first time with my full-face snorkel mask and Scuba Tector, ready for a hunt. The life guards arrived at 0900 and leave at 1800. I had my booties on, Scuba Tector in my pocket, hand shovel in the other and was showing my mask to a fella that lives in town. I started toward the water and decided I best read the Rules sign on one of the lifeguard chairs. On top was "No swimming when lifeguards are not present". Toward the bottom of about 10 rules was "No Snorkeling". WHAT!!!! I was floored. I spoke to a lifeguard and there was no way around it. After talking with the older resident I was speaking with earlier about my dilemma, he said just come back after the guards leave and you will have no problem, as people still get in the water even when lifeguards are not there. That is what I had to do. Show up at about 1750, get dressed up and as the guards left and went over the hill to their cars, I hit the water :) Only problem was the water was FREEZING cold and there were not quite as many targets as I had hoped. Though snorkeling with the Scuba Tector, I can only go as far as I can reach my arm, depthwise. It was still a blast. My son was a lifeguard on the Island and we were there to pick him up after 3 months working there for the summer. I tried detecting in the water at the swim beach on the island, but there were so many bolts from the dock and junk, not to mention a very small area to hunt, that I left after a short time.

By the way Andy, I believe it was you whom I contacted a couple years ago concerning the White's Beach Hunter ID. I think I we even talked on the phone, I don't recall for sure. How did you like living in the Schroon Lake area? I bet it was cold.
