Scuba SWFL

I don't think no one is going to tell you where to go down here in SWFL,but if you are going to Scuba dive here you don't need a scoop just fan it.Gold is very hard to find here,so good luck. Stay away from all State parks MD are not allow in the water in all of them.

Well, I will give you a GREAT tip on Florida. I was there 3 winters ago and hit 4 beaches. I found lots and lots of coins and rings. I do know the best beaches to go to, since I have been studying all the posts on here for a long time. So since I live in Michigan I will give you my valuable advice.

First look for a beach that people have visited. Make sure the beach has a waterline. That attracts people. If you find a beach that has people and water, thats the beach I would try. And Junklord is right. You don't need a scoop on scuba or snorkeling BUT either one the law states you MUST have a dive flag.

Thank you for the info. Just order the excal scuba set up from Anderson, didn't want to build this one. I'll let you know how i do. If anyone else dives and would be into doing scuba detecting around the Fort Myers area please contact me. Always better to dive with a buddy.

I had a nice bump on my shoulder as I was scraping seaweed off a buoy line with a knife in clear waist deep water. A 6 foot shark came from behind me and bumped my shoulder as it circled around me skimming across my face ( I was snorkelling). Just a friendly reminder to always keep your eyes open. Mind you my worst injury detecting was from accidently grabbing a hermit crab while clearing my sand scoop, ouch ha ha. I now fear crabs more than sharks. :clapping:
I am new to the forum and have to know more about your bling on your profile pic. Wow when was that, details?

Only had a 6 or 9 in it. I thought it was probably fake. Put it on my pinky and kept diving. Got to a jewlery store 3 minutes before closing. Still in my wetsuit I walked in. I asked them just to tell me its real. Checked it and came back. Said I had between 12 and 15 grand there ansd told me congrats. LOL I was high on life all evening!!

I have a very funny story I will share tonight about Florida sharks. Absolutely true.

Snorkeling in Florida, a person on a 4 wheeler screamed at me to get out of the water. I looked up and asked him why? He yelled again to get out, again I asked why? He yelled that I was going to jail! I came out and asked him if he was a peace officer. He said yes. I said show me your id. He had red swim trunks on and a tee shirt. He said its in the lifeguard shack. One of the bystanders said that he could put me in jail. I laughed and said I doubt it. LOL at that time there were a lot of bystanders around.

I had drifted down from the condo beach to the city owned beach, and he was a lifeguard. I had NO idea. He told me to sit on the 4 wheeler, I said no, I'm going back to the condos and get back in. He said there were sharks out there. I said so what? I walked away and went back in the water by the condo. After a while two police officers in uniform yelled at me to get out of the water.

I came out and their was a sergeant and an officer. The officer asked why I gave the lifeguard a hard time. I said that first I didn't know he was a lifeguard and second he wouldn't tell me why I had to get out of the water. I then told them I was a state police officer in Utah before and he gave me a hard time. He wouldn't answer my question.

The rookie cop softened a bit and I said if that guy was a cop like he said he was, he should have had ID on him. They said maybe he left it somewhere and I just dropped it. Then the rookie got out a pen and paper and asked me for my information to notify my next of kin!! LOL I laughed, I said I have been diving for 30 years and no black tipped shark has ever bothered me. We chatted a while while the bystanders were waiting for me to be cuffed in my wetsuit!! I gave them my information including my Michigan drivers license number and when leaving they said I had to have a dive flag while snorkeling. I said does that mean your giving me a ticket? They said, just letting you know the law! They also told me to stay in front of the condos and not to drift down to the city beach.

OK fast forward to that evening. Totally dark and detecting while wading. A large fish probably about 2' long maybe less, jumped out of the water and hit me in the left shoulder. SCARED the CWAP out of me!! I got out shaking so hard, I gave up detecting that evening.

My trip to Florida for 3 weeks resulted in 688 coins and one gold ring!! But it was a great experience to have in February instead of sitting in Michigan. Never hunted Florida beaches before and had NO idea that lifeguards had any authority and I guess they really don't. Your not breaking any law questioning why you need to be out of the water. BUT I guess you can be told to get out of the water on city owned beaches.
