screaming pinpoint

Get to use a neighbors MXT tomorrow. Tried to get used to it this morning. I use a pair of Killer B's Wasp headphones. Had volume on phones set at comfortable level for pinging on targets. But pinpointing was almost painful it was so loud. Clicked the limiter switch but it made no difference. Just reread the info that came with the phones and noticed it says limiter switch works best with detectors that have a volume control. I have to turn down the volume on the phones so much that target signals are pretty quiet. Can still hear targets but will I still be able to hear the deeper targets with volume turned down so low?
Any body here that also uses Killer B Wasps that could give me some info?
Love the MXT and will be my next detector.
The good news is that while trying to get used to the MXT in the yard I found '43 Washington quarter, 1918 wheatback, and a pretty cool brass Corbin padlock. All that had been missed by my old Classic III.
Sorry about the length of this post. Plan on being at the old school by the time the sun comes up tomorrow and don't want to be wondering if I'm missing anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Dave

HI Dave. I also use the Killer B Wasp phones. The pinpointing does get a bit loud at times. I think I'm maybe getting used to it. The very shallow targets are the ear piercing ones, for my ears at least. Anything deeper than a couple inches doesn't seem to bother me too much. The deeper the target, the quieter the pinpointing gets.

I use the Killer B Wasps also. They are my favorite headphones, without a doubt!
While I was out today working a very littered corner lot where a building burned down a decade or so back and then the park across the street, I was also dealing with a blasted headache, so pinpointing with my MXT wasn't enjoyable. As 'DW' stated, it is especially annoying (painfull??) when the targets are relatively shallow.
I almost always hunt with the MXT at +3 gain and factory preset discrimination. Because a Gain setting of +3 is producing the highest target volume as well as saturating the audio more (which can cause a bit of an audio blast in itself), what I often do before I go to pinpoint is glance at the TID and the 'confidence bars.'
If I get a full (tall) bar I know the detected target is relatively shallow. If this is the case then I am going to use more caution when I toggle into Pinpoint. I will do a little 'advance detuning' by placing the coil's center just slightly off to the side of the anticipated target's location.
This is the same as 'detuning' over a target during pinpointing procedures, but rather than hear the very pronounced audio response to a shallow target, I 'de-tune' the detector in advance. The coin depth reading will naturally not be correct, but you already know it is a shallow target, anyway!

Thanks Monte. Makes perfect sense. I'll give it a try. I think the Wasps are great. So's the MXT. I talked with you a bit about the IDX Pro awhile back but chickened out and got new tires for the truck instead. Kind of glad I did because after using this MXT I've decided this is the one for me. Thanks again for all your help. I appreciate it.

Looks like the Gray Ghosts built-in sound limiter out performs the Wasp's switchable limiter. I never even compared that feature when I tried those Killer B's. It was the noise reduction that sold me to the Gray Ghosts.
Advantage must go to the Gray Ghosts NDT because I have no problems with blaring sounds on the MXT (or Tejon).
Are you 100% certain the sound limiter is switched ON? I know you know the difference, but those darn toggles can get bumped into a different position quite easily.

Monte,
I conclude from your description of your hunt location that you tried the challenging location I told you about. Did you get anything (other than a headache)?

Actually, I didn't get to the E-mail until after I was home. I am going to respond to it tonight, too.
I have taked only a few things from that lot area, and a friend got a nice tog tag from there, but that was back about '97 or '98 it seems.
I only spent about thiry minutes there, which is what I generally do on my trips to 'Mac', and more time in the park across the street. Primarily I look for any renovation in the older yards, but the park has kicked out two gold coins that I know of.
I only used the 8" DD in the lot. Next trip will be the 5" EXcelerator!
