Scrapping lead sinkers

Dancer

Well-known member
Few yrs ago, I found some lead lifting weights and turned them in for scrap. I bet some of you guys have made a few bucks turning in these toxic wastes, huh ? Poor mans gems.

yep i gotta few of these things too..i just put them into a bucket, not sure what to do with them..:clapping:

I melt them down and make egg weights for bottom fishing the Gulf, and 1lb cannonballs for Lake Trout here in Michigan. I normally use a quick release on the cannonballs while trolling, so when the fish hits the weight drops to bottom. Getting the lead for free is the only way to go..:)

I'm stockpiling mine to melt and cast for my .45 Long Colt in preparation for the upcoming food wars.

Depending on where you live. You can resale them to fishing supply stores or bait shops. Don't plan on getting rich this way. The other place is a scrap yard or recycler. Good luck.

I collect them and when I get a 15 or 20 I give then to one of the fisherman. They say they are expensive if they buy them and appreciate free ones..

Well stated VBDave. I procured 100 lbs of lead from tire shops for said reason.

Just remember that wheel weights are harder than pure lead and will cast a lighter projectile than pure lead as well.

I melt im down 4R 45 Cal Bullets, Mickfin

When I get a bucket full or have a dead car battery or other scrap metal to add in, I take it to the local metal recycler.

I go to fishing tournaments and win big money for the smallest fish weighing the most.......................................................... Really, I guess I don't do enough detecting..think I may dig 5 or 6 a year in my 30 or so times I get out...................................

Yeah, now your talking. I think when I turned mine in I got somewhere near a dollar a lb.

I own RP LORD SRCAP METAL AND HAULING , I get lead from cars, boat, and treasure hunters !!! I find about 40 lbs of lead with my detector a month.

n/t

I made the mold from two pieces of Aluminum.. Ger the stainless and cut to an appropriate size, fit it into the mold and place the attaching hook in, bolt the two halves together, melt the lead, pour into the mold, and there you go.

This picture is one that you buy commercially... But the ones I make are pretty much identical.
