Scrap or...?

I'm getting ready to go to the scrap yard with copper and brass and I always check it and weigh it before I leave. I sure don't want to scrap a "treasure" that is unidentified hahah. When I picked this 7.25" long solid orange brass item up, I thought maybe I need to ask the experts on the Whatzit Forum weather I should save this thing or scrap it? Thanks for any help! Best of luck and...

Save it--- Goldnugget--- I threw away once a Lead Pencil. got home from Virginia and started to read a current issue of a Tresuare Hunting magazine and it had about 6 pictures of a Civil War Lead pencil rolled from a Civil War Minnie Bullet.

I'm afraid in the past I was guilty of tossing out a couple of fuses for artillery shells before I was told what they actually were:sad: Sorry I can't really help with ID but it sort of has the rope/rein guide shape to it though it's probably something totally different? Hope someone can ID it for you. Good luck and good hunting!

Howdy Goldnugget--

I saved it. For how long, I don't know. If I don't find out what it is, I might modify it into a nasty set of brass knuckles hahah. Or it could go into my next batch of scrap. Scrap is low now. I got $1.94 per pound for #2 copper, $1.45 per pound for brass and $.30 per pound for lead. I know how you feel about not recognizing a good find like that pencil. I've let some goodies go too. Best of luck and...

Thanks for your input Texadillo. When I first started detecting seriously about 30 years ago, I dug several old brass locks that I left on the old foundations. I didn't realize that they were collectible. Not that it helps any, but I know how you feel about your fuses. Thanks again. Best of luck and...

Thanks flinthunter. There is a good chance that you are right. I can see it as a some type of rope guide. Best of luck and ...

I think it is part of the bit that fits in a horse mouth. The part that puts pressure on the tongue with the ends broke off. I could be wrong but that's what it looks like.
