Scrap Gold from Jobson's Cove and a Near Heartstopper:cool:

I decided to work the swimming hole at Jobson's Cove yesterday afternoon. I was into it for half an hour when a fella named Andrew arrived with his Head Hunter Wader so we stopped for a chat. Andrew never goes deeper than his knees which is perfect with me as I rarely come in that shallow, no feedback from having the machines too close to each other. A lot of sand had been stripped out of the swimming hole and after a foot of sand I was into the gravel.:clapping:EXCELLENT! A lot of old bullets came up in the scoop which was tiring but I did manage a 14k Earring and a pulverized gold ring with a large red stone. I was shocked:shocked: when I looked into my scoop and saw all that red staring back at me. The ring has been down there for a long time based on how heavily encrusted it was (I'd guess 50 yrs. +/-). I don't think it's a Ruby but I can't say for sure because my diamond tester only rings positive for diamonds, all other stones light up as simulants. If it is a ruby it would total 8 carats, but time to stop dreaming about that lottery win.:crylol:

The ring with half of the crud cleaned off it

Something that bright would have startled me too. That was a Super Scoop

The ring itself was just scrap after being pulverized in the gravel for so long so I pulled the stone and cleaned it up a bit. Here are the pics of the stone.

Not quite as big as a dime

The glass marble was found about 20 feet from where I found the ring

Most of the glass marbles I find like the one above are from old soda bottles where the marble was used for part of the carbonation process back in the 30's. Silica glass has a hardness of quartz (7) so the stone must have a hardness greater than that. That leaves certain types of garnet, spinel and ruby in the running for the type of stone.
Any thoughts on the type of stone would be appreciated. I don't want to take it to a jeweller just yet. I sure wish my diamond tester was better so I could use it to determine the type of stone.

Thanks,

looks to be cab on one side and facet on bottom. any inclusions showing when holding toward light? looks like a nice stone.

That's what I've been thinking too! I guess it's time to take a trip to the jewellers and pay to find out. If it's a good quality stone I'll have a custom piece of jewellery made up for my wife for her birthday on the 24th. If not I better get out there and get scooping for something nice before the 24th comes around.

Thanks,

A synthetic or man made ruby tests the same on a gem tester but a trained eye will detect the difference. The things you learn while enjoying this hobby, go figure.
