Scouting out new sites....

Yesterday, before the big snow storm came my hunting buddy & I did some exploring in a rural area we had not seen yet hoping to come across some possible Colonial sites for this detecting season. We got into a really nice rural town with some history, & it didn't take long to see the first site.....an early foundation or "cellar hole". The yard is nice & open & looks great for detection....

Driving on up the road a little we saw all these nice colonial stone walls on both sides of the road. Rob, took 1 side & I took the other. Rob found another cellar hole on his side & I took this picture of the real nice walls on my side. The dusting of snow brings them right out & is perfect contrast for locating new sites. You wouldn't even see this with summer leaf cover....

Right in the center of the picture I noticed some metal sticking up out of the ground, & often we find they dumped trash over stone walls. I saw some china shards & picked up half of a "Warner's Safe Cure". That got me running to get Rob & some digging tools :). Here's Rob opening up the bottle dump....

We didn't have much time to dig...& what we did dig was some real heartbreaker broken stuff. Several bitters, medicines, and a J.I.E.M. igloo ink. There was tons of debris. Here's some pic's of all the best shards...

We didn't even come close to digging it all out, so there may be some nice whole bottles there we hope. Plus we have 2 new cellar holes to detect when we head back that way too. We will make a day of it for sure! :) (& hopefully another YouTube video)....

Thanks for looking,

Looks like you are going to be busy for a while. I wish you the best of luck and can't wait to see some pictures.

PS.
Do you have much coal around the sites you hunt. I don't do well around old cellar holes. Between all the trash and the coal it makes for a hard hunt. I have old stone walls and old log cabins everywhere here in WV. but it just seem like a waste of time MD'ing them. I do much better at the turn of the century homes.

Just tons of iron, like all the square nails that held up the house, etc. Sometimes in later years they had this sheet metal copper stuff (maybe for roof?). This stuff is bad as each piece of copper reads like a large cent! :(
Yes, we'll be busy around there for awhile. I forgot to say that second picture we can always detect all around those stone walls too for coins & relics.....Hopefully we'll have some nice goodies to post from there.......

I like to bring a multitude of detectors if I can like the T2, C$, & F75 are my top 3 toys at the moment. Since this site we have permission & we can park nearby I can keep different detectors & coils in the car (not like those deep hikes where I can only bring 1). I like to start with one unit, & mark targets with those little flags you can get at the hardware stores. Then after I get several interesting signals marked I can try another unit to see how the ID is, etc. Or how another coil will handle it. This is a great way to field test different settings & stuff. Also, nice way to call your buddy over to make sure he can pick it up with his unit/ settings.
Hopefully by the time the snow melts here, I'll have the new small DD coil for wither the T2 or F75 to test around the foundations. The open parts around the stone walls pictured would be ideal for say the F70 coil. I like that concentric for open areas like that....

Bill
