Scouting for a Ghost Town

Recently found out about a northern Idaho town founded in 1884, that was totally deserted by 1921. A pilot/friend who recently acquired his first metal detector is interested in hunting it with me. He invited me to accompany him this afternoon to see if we could locate it from the air. We didn't find the landmark we were looking for (though we should be able to find it by car) - but did spot a couple of long-abandoned buildings in a remote area that looked somewhat promising. This shot is of the general vicinity....

We have always talked about doing that here, like in the winter when the tree's are bare. That must be a great way to find sites. I think I have to find a pilot friend & let him borrow a detector even :blush

Follow up....

I mentioned the scouting trip to a client of mine yesterday, and when I told him about the two abandoned buildings we'd spotted from the air, he said, "I know exactly where they are. I used to hunt [elk, deer] around there."

Sooo, I told him I had an extra detector, if he'd like to show us the way. Looks like the 3 of us will be heading there in the near future.

One of these days, I'd really like to find something really OLD, like you guys back east! ("Old" like you guys sometimes find, I mean. Not, "old like you guys.")

It's tough out here, where civilization has been around for only 125 years or so....
