Thought I would post , since the Nokta thread is getting all the attention lately :smoke:

Still can't quite get into our really old sites yet so have been hunting a "newer" older site here local. Managed to snag this lil baby the other day. Monte & I was out and he was testing/evaluating the impact. I hit this signal /target and was jumping mid 80's to mid 90's .....the audio was great the VDI numbers were jumping. I called Monte over and had him swing that new multi-functional toy over the target. He also got the same results. If you ever hunted old ghost towns and encounter the small rusty tin pieces that read high vdi numbers but jump around and drive you crazy....this signal was acting somewhat like that. We figured we might have a quarter in the ground.

I slowly dug down about 3 1/2 " or so and found the target. It was almost standing vertical.....just slightly canted. Out pops a 1945 WLH. Surprised me a bit. But is always nice to find some big silver. After we got the coin out we re-swung over the hole and it was loaded with iron......non stop low tone grunts. So that explains why a big ol' half dollar had some jumpy numbers, was standing vertical and surrounded with nails and other junk.

It came out completely black. I actually didn't realize at first what exactly it was till I took my shirt and gently cleaned off a little of it ( see pic)

All in all it was a fun few hours and it's my 1st WLH dollar., Monte managed to coax out a silver Rosie in that trashy site with the Impact.

Infact I am meeting Monte in an hour to give that site another try and I won't let that Impact machine push my Racer 2 around :drinking:

OG congrats on "snaking out" the Walker.

Walkers will put a smile on your face, congrats on the digs!

BTW that little NEL Snake coil is a winner!

hh,
Brian

Thanks Guys,

Cal-Cobra, I really do like that Snake coil. It performs very well.

Gregg, Mine is the Cors Shrew and I haven't put on the OOR or the 5.5" since I got it. In fact, I sold my 5.5" because I preferred the OOR over it and I like the Shrew better than both. The Shrew (Snake) gives me equal depth to the Makro coils, as good or better separation with a little more ground coverage. I'm glad to see your's is treating you well. Just make sure you leave a few coins for the rest of us.

Yeah! Nice one mate! :clapping:

Matt

Very nice find!!!
Another of my bucket list items!!!
How's that snake coil working?
You prefer it over your 5.5x10 and your small round?
Didn't know you used aftermarket coils.
Was looking into those. Well cors but I hear they are the same company I dunno.
Happy hunting!!

Hi Stoof, yes NEL and CORS are same coils, different names. I think because of distribution agreements etc etc they had to sell under a few different names. Anyhow, The NEL Snake & Cors Shrew are the same coil. I really like the Snake coil, performs well and it stays on the R2 most the time now. (Hell even if the Snake coil didn't perform, I would still swing it anyways....kinda cool swinging a coil that shares the same name as all my ex-girlfriends) and If I encounter an area , less trash then I just grab the Fors CoRe with the 5.5x10 coil that stays on it full time. They make a nice combo :)

Oh ok cool.
I looked at them but that tiny one seemed too small.

Stoof, generally the largest coil I use is the 5.5x10 on the CoRe. If you can get out West for one of the outings and see the kinda iron/trash etc that we deal with in these old ghost towns then you would see why we use the small coils. This year for example, I will use the OOR or 5 1/2" or the Snake coil prob 85% of the time or more and the last 15% a larger coil ( the 5.5x10). It,s rare I hunt a park, so once in awhile I might go hit the fringe areas of a ghost town that has less trash and use the larger 5.5 x 10 coil. The Staock coil for my R2 stays at home....never use it.

I use my 5.5 more than anything as well.
I hunt parks mostly and see kind of trashy area like the entrances to my apartment buildings. But there isn't too much trash there.
If I see a need, I'll get something that fills it.
My stocks coil doesn't see much time unless I'm out on farmland.
I do have the 5.5x10 concentric on the way for my relic. Very curious about that.
Ironically same day I ordered it from overseas, kellyco pits it up on preorder status....
Only took them a year haha. Good thing someone else pointed it out, I never got an answer to my many emails. Well one. Simply said "we don't stock it" that's it lol
But I live my concentrics on my tesoros and my soil is ok here so I'm excited to try it out!!

Gregg,

A Walker is always a great find - That snake is one mean little coil, do you have to wear special boots when you're using it? - My CORS Point is on the way. I have just the place to give it a try when it becomes open. Meanwhile, it was another few hours at the Racer 2 Training grounds earlier today.

I adjusted Di3 mid-tone up to the 50 (500's) so I could hear it better and voila, i found a larger percentage of foil today. Imagine. About halfway thru my time there, and seeing that I was finding more foil, I asked myself, if I am going to dig mid-tones and high tones just the same, does it make a difference for me to be running on Di3, or could I just as easily use Di2 and run my tones ferrous / non-ferrous ? So, I changed over to Di2 and ran it this way for my last 45 minutes. Does Di2 seem to operate smoother to you? Or is it just a perception since there are fewer different tones going on?

Rich -

Rich here is a good test. Do the nail board test in Di3, then do it again in Di2. In Di2 the target pops or does sound better. If a site was only infested with nails Di2 would be a good choice. But as we know they are not and Di3 becomes the better choice. With the rusted tin etc in Di3 it is easier to tell the rusted tin. For parks etc Di2 is a good choice. Infact to get a better answer, post this question over at Monte's site. He is far better at explaining stuff than I am ..........stay tuned Monte just happened to call.....so I told him to check this out :)

Rich, I am sure you are going to patiently put in the time to learn your Racer 2. Once you get comfortable with the mode you prefer to use for an attached search coil, then you can save all the settings you prefer for each different search mode and be ready to quickly shift to them on-the-fly if, and when, desired. We all have our preferences for search modes used, settings we like, and a Discriminate level that we can tolerate. I have found it interesting to read the modes and settings used by many posters. I know I have my preferences, and I don't mind sharing them, but I also definitely don't encourage anyone to use the settings that I like. They have to learn the detector and how it works, then settle on the settings for them and where and how they hunt.

I like to use the 2-Tone mode a lot, but mainly when using a larger or standard-size 7X11 DD when searching more open areas with sparse trash. I like the 2-Tone mode(s) when working low-to moderate littered sites with a mid-sized coil, like the 5½1X10 Double-D or Concentric, when iron nails are the primary ferrous trash offender at a location.

I opt for Di3 / 3-Tone mode (on the CoRe, Relic and Racer 2) for a lot of urban Coin & Jewelry Hunting in a trashier environment or close to metal structures, and for Relic Hunting when dealing with a lot of debris in an area, especially when I encounter a lot of sheet-iron such as rusty tin. In those cases I can get better target information, both visibly and audibly. Note that almost all of the time when I use a 3-Tone operation on a Racer 2, Relic or CoRe, it is when I have a smaller-size coil mounted to help deal with the dense trash and/or confined spaces caused by dense brush or building rubble.

The VCO enhanced modulated audio of the 2-Tone modes does tend to be 'smoother' to me and often less 'noisy' compared with the processed audio of the 3-Tone mode on the Racer 2, or CoRe or Relic. But I like how both the 2-Tone and 3-Tone modes perform and convey useful information in addition to just providing a good-target response.

Keep us posted on how you and your Racer 2 and coils are getting along, and I look forward to seeing you on one or both WTHO's this year .... better equipped. ;)

Monte

Good info Monte , I,m new to the Racer and trying different modes. Do have preferences on the tone break in Mode 2 and 3? Thanks., GB

Hi Monte,

Once I find a detector that fits, I tend to hang onto them a pretty long time. I am looking forward to the WTHO's as well. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, it is ALWAYS appreciated.
