Scoops, How too homemade

I see alot of posts here about scoops. I make my own do to myself, the two boys and my brother useing them and also a few friends. This does require some man toys, drill press, welder for aluminum, metal roller and a metal shear. Any machine shop has this stuff, its just what they want to charge you to do the work, ive had some do it for the mechanics lunch or others that want 65.00 an hour. Aluminum has went up in price big time, I use 6061 1/8 inch size 21inches by 8 inches for the scoop, then a 7inch by 7 inch piece for the scoop bottom. All are drilled with 1/2 inch holes, thats my choice, you can use any size you want and as many holes as you want, I may make one with 7/8 holes just to check it out.

Purchase metal from a sheetmetal shop, I build 5 at a time, they will cut it to the size you want.

Lay out and drill the holes, WD-40 works great while drilling aluminum.

Now its time to put it in a metal roller to make the circle

Weld the seam on top where the circle meets and then lay it down on the end plate and weld that on

Grind off the excess metal plate and the scoop part is done.

I use 1 inch schedule 40 aluminum pipe for the handel, 48 inches of it, it welds to the front part of the scoop at an angle of your choice and the little corner cuts that you saved that look like a long triangle are used as a brace between the handel and the scoop.

As you can see there is a little involved in doing one of these scoops and I can tell you that the scoop makers that sell them are top notch, they have all the fancy machines and guys that weld them up with nice pretty beads. The welding I do is kind of ugly but it holds and even my son Robrcer has more trouble breaking welds, he just likes to snap off the handels. Try to make one if you want or try a scoop maker to buy one, Remember, its got to be tough and stand up to the digging, walking off the beach with a broken scoop is a bummer.

I have been thinking about doing the same thing. One of the places where I clean I know the handyman/machinist there really good and I know he can do it. Actually I would like an aluminum handle to keep weight down BUT I want a steel scoop.

Great info! Thank you!

Can you share the link where to buy sheet metal, tubes for handle and rubber grips ?

Grazie!

I started out with a Lincolin Weld Pack mig machine and started to weld steel, just kept doing it untill i got better and better, Then got the aluminum kit for it and started out learning the same way. Got tired of switching out my machine from steel to aluminum and bought another machine from Harbor Freight and use that one for aluminum only now. I use c02 gas for steel and argone for aluminum and stainless.

Schedule 40 aluminum pipe 1 inch in dia. comes from any metal sales place or an electrical supply store, its 1 inch aluminum conduit in 10 foot lengths, the aluminum pipe I think comes 20 or 24 feet per length.

The rubber grips are from any bike shop, I use 3/4 schedule 40 pipe for the short handel on the side of the long handel

Ill show photos when I finish this batch.

Hi norm mate is that your garage!!!! mate i would like to spend a few hours in ther as a retired sheety i got all excited when i saw that WHEEEW calm down terry.

save money, maybe. looks like atleast a grand in equipment plus several hrs of labor. not to mention the skill needed.
please don't take this wrong, the scoops are cool and there is nothing that beats using tools you made. plus you can make as many modifications as you want in search of the perfect scoop, that by the way is the one i'm looking for!!

just my opinion.

I cannot find nothing commercially made that would satisfy me. Even my last aquisition - Diamond extended handle. I use my home made and in the process of creating a better one - improved. Hours and hours of labor. You are 100% right!

I have about the same equipment except for the roller to make the flat into tube. I just bought 6" round tube to start with. Drilled the holes; welded an end cap; and then welded a braced handle. During your construction of the next one, you may want to consider some kind of design that will allow you to reduce the overall length so it will fit in the largest luggage one can take on an airline without a sir charge. I did it with a another piece of tubing about 6" long that has the same OD as the handle' ID. I drilled holes through the handle OD while the ID tubing was sitting inside the handle. I then put stainless bolts with lock nuts on them to mechanically tie them together.
Drilling all those holes is a massive time consuming process (even tougher on a round surface) and I had to sharpen my drill bit a couple of times. I drilled pilot holes and then went two increases till I got up to the 5/8 hole size. Preparing a pattern to make sure the holes are symmetrical takes some calculating also. Yep! Unless you have the equipment and a lot of the skills necessary to do the building, you are much better off letting someone else do the building. Work a few hours overtime and spend it on a good scoop. It's worth it. Jim

i've been using this scoop for about a month. they tried knocking some of the weight out, this baby sifts sand like WOW! getting closer!
